Job Summary
The Libraries at CU Boulder encourage applications for an
Audiovisual Media Specialist Position! Under Digital Asset Management and
Preservation Services (DAMPS), the Audiovisual Media Specialist works as part
of the DAMPS Digital Media Services (DMS) team with the operation, maintenance,
and development of a broad spectrum of audio, video, and film digitization and
production technologies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Audio Digitization and Preservation
- Conducts
physical inspection, cleaning, and repairs on analog and digital audio
formats (e.g. reel-to-reel, cassette, Digital Audio Tape, phonograph
records)
- Operates
audio playback and digitization hardware and software
- Digitizes
and converts analog and digital audio for fee-based and collection-related
media projects
- Identifies
and troubleshoots issues related to physical items, playback equipment,
and the digitization process
- Performs
controlled baking of magnetic media to mitigate sticky shed syndrome
according to best practices and safety standards
- Assists
in updating audio digitization software, workflows, and signal paths to
maintain high quality processes
- Performs
post-production using professional audio editing software
- Performs
quality control assessments
- Thoroughly
logs digitization projects, including technical metadata and
troubleshooting notes
- Applies
and maintains knowledge of audio equipment and preservation standards
(e.g. FADGI, IASA, AES)
- Builds
and maintains relationships across campus and within the Libraries to
facilitate and manage audio digitization projects
Video and Film Conversion, Digitization, and Production
- Conducts
physical inspection, cleaning, and repairs on analog and digital video
formats (e.g. VHS, Betacam, U-Matic) and film (e.g. 8mm, Super 8mm, 16mm)
- Operates
video and film digitization hardware and software
- Digitizes
and converts video and motion picture film for fee-based and
collection-related projects
- Identifies
and troubleshoots issues related to physical items, playback equipment,
and the digitization process
- Performs
post-production using professional video editing software
- Performs
quality control assessments
- Thoroughly
logs digitization projects, including technical metadata and
troubleshooting notes
- Converts
and uploads DVD and Blu-ray titles to campus educational streaming server,
abiding by copyright and fair use guidelines approved by University
Counsel
- Provides
video production assistance as a co‐producer and camera operator for
Libraries special events and projects
- Performs
digital media asset management and supports digital preservation,
archiving, and network transfer tasks, including upload of digital media
files to short- and long-term digital storage solutions
DMS Lab Operations Support
- Provides
compassionate customer service support via telephone, email, and Customer
Service Management software (e.g. ServiceNow) to optimally handle patron
expectations
- Assists
with providing estimates for patron conversion and digitization projects
- Assists
with the completion and updating of all media services order forms and
logs as assigned
- Trains
student assistants and interns on digitization and media conversion
workflows
- Collaborates
with the DMS staff to develop multimedia presentations, slideshows, and
other promotional and outreach content and represents DMS and Libraries at
public and campus events as needed
- Keeps
current with guidelines on copyright and fair use relative to media
content
Equipment Maintenance, Repair, and Inventory Assistance
- Assists
with maintenance and repair of audiovisual media equipment in DMS by
conducting in-house repairs and preventative maintenance
- Contributes
to DMS’ in-house inventories of audiovisual and computer equipment and
software as appropriate
- Supports
research and evaluation of new audiovisual equipment purchases
Professional Development and Continuing Education
Activities
- Maintains
currency with standard processes and new developments
- Attends
workshops, webinars, online courses, information sessions
- Uses
online and other unstructured resources for self-education
What You Should Know
Primarily onsite with some opportunity for remote work at
times.
What We Can Offer
The annual salary range for this full-time position is
$49,000-$55,100. A small relocation assistance stipend may be available within
University Libraries guidelines.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s
Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education from an
accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment
- One
year of experience handling and operating analog and digital audio
materials and equipment (e.g. reel to reel, cassette, phonograph records,
Digital Audio Tape, CD)
What You Will Need
- Knowledge
of analog and digital audio formats, signal paths, and playback equipment
- Basic
familiarity with digitization and preservation guidelines and standards
- Motivation
to sustain expertise across a variety of audiovisual formats

to collaborate in a small team setting

What We Would Like You to Have
- Two
years of experience digitizing analog audio formats in an academic
library, cultural heritage, or private business setting
- Experience
with audio digitization and preservation standards, playback equipment,
device interconnections, and troubleshooting and repair techniques
- Experience
with audio recording and production
- Experience
in video or film digitization and preservation
- Experience
in training, mentoring, or instructing others
- Familiarity
with fundamentals of digital storage (disk vs. tape, RAID levels, etc.)
and computer networking
