The Library Access Services Assistant delivers exceptional customer service to a diverse and geographically distributed community of users, including university faculty, staff, students, and local residents. As part of the Access Services team, this position supports physical access to library collections and spaces and is cross-trained across multiple functional areas such as circulation, reserves, stacks management, interlibrary/intercampus loan, and space management.
The role requires proficiency with a range of library systems, including Innovative Interfaces (Sierra), Ares, ILLiad, OCLC, Swift, and Prospector. Responsibilities include maintaining building order, opening and closing the library, and addressing patron concerns with professionalism and tact. The Library Assistant also provides support to colleagues across departments and contributes to a collaborative, service-oriented team environment.
This position is .75 FTE and will be responsible for closing the building.
Schedule: During the Fall-Spring Semesters (August-April): Monday-Thursday: 12:15pm-8:15 pm;
University breaks and Summer Hours: Monday -Thursday, 9:15 am- 5:15 pm
Pay Rate:
18.81-$19.80/hourly, commensurate with qualifications
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential:
1. Evaluates and processes reserves and resource sharing requests: conducts bibliographic verification and database searching; photocopies, scans and downloads articles; orders materials not owned by Regis; processes materials for mailing; sends materials to patrons.
2. Screens and answers or refers inquiries, in person and over email, chat, and the telephone, as appropriate.
3. Instructs patrons on locating books, periodicals, and government documents using the library catalog.
4. Assists with the recruitment, training and supervision of student assistants
5. Shelves and shifts books, newspapers and periodicals, and maintains orderliness of library.
6. Ensures patron safety by identifying emergency situations and notifying authorities, notifying patrons and/or clearing the building as necessary.
7. Monitors alarm systems for library collections and building security and communicates with security personnel when necessary.
Working Conditions: The job is primarily indoors. Employee should be able to tolerate moderate variations in temperature and book dust.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience:
1. Previous experience working with the public and demonstrated interest in providing excellent service to patrons/customers.
2. Evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
3. Ability to maintain poise while effectively managing a multi-task operation.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele.
5. Demonstrated computer skills and willingness to learn new skills and/or technologies.
6. 2 years' experience with a circulation and interlibrary loan module of an automated library system preferred.
