Summary of Function:
Under general direction, performs professional and administrative tasks related to the operation of the Adult Services Department, including planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating library services. Supervises Adult Services Librarian staff. Provides customer service including adult reference and readers’ advisory; technology training and assistance; collection management; and program planning and delivery for adult library patrons.
Job Functions:

Oversees all activities of the Adult Services department.

Hires Adult Services staff in consultation with the Library Director and other department heads.

Supervises and evaluates the performance of the Adult Services staff.

Provides training and training opportunities for staff.
-
Provides input in developing the library’s annual budget.
-
Manages the departmental budget.
-
Develops and proposes relevant policies and procedures.
-
Compiles, reports, and evaluates statistics.
-
Oversees library programming for adults.
-
Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to the public in person, by phone, and email.

Participates in collection management for the reference and adult collections, including weeding and inventory.

Trains and assists patrons in the use of library equipment and technology.

Conducts bibliographic instruction and tours.

Promotes the library’s resources and services through displays, articles, and other means.

Helps maintain the content of the relevant sections of the website and social media outlets.

Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations and forms productive relationships with other local agencies.

Attends professional meetings, conferences, and training sessions for professional development.

Initiates, participates and collaborates in the library profession beyond MRLD.

Initiates, participates and collaborates with MRLD staff on projects and committees.

Participates in activities such as staff meetings, committee work and trainings.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

The starting rate for the Head of Adult Services is $51,700 annually, with an additional increase for a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or related field) from an ALA-accredited university; we will also provide a salary increase for proficiency in Spanish.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. A Master’s Degree in Library Science accredited from ALA is preferred. Three years’ progressively responsible experience working as a library professional is required. Supervisory experience is preferred. Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to employ effective search strategies with both print and electronic resources.

Knowledge of online library catalogs, Internet search tools, online reference sources, Microsoft Windows and Office applications, and related technologies is required.

Knowledge of electronic resources including subscription databases, mobile technologies, and social media is strongly preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred.

Working Environment:
Performs job in a library setting with some hectic or demanding situations. Job involves working a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends, which may change periodically. Encounters situations that involve behavioral issues. Position involves frequent interruptions with maximum flexibility required. Occasional work outside the library building and travel may be required.
Beautiful and rural community of approximately 21,000. High proportion of LatinX communities and poverty level patrons. Very recreational and outdoors oriented area with hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, state and national parks.
