Job Description

The Outreach Librarian performs professional duties including planning and implementing community outreach activities; developing outreach collections including print and specialty materials, overseeing library marketing and communications, and additional functions in specialty area of responsibility. Requires some evening and weekend hours. Reports to the Library Director.
 
GENERAL STATEMENT

Requires some evening and weekend hours. Reports to the Library Director. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares, schedules, delivers and evaluates outreach efforts on behalf of the library, independently and in coordination with other library staff, to support the library’s mission. 
  • Coordinates year-round literacy and enrichment programs and services with collaborative community partners including local schools, senior housing, homebound patrons and community sites. 
  • Drives the Library Bookmobile, conducts regular vehicle inspections and fueling, and coordinates vehicle maintenance and cleaning to facilitate the delivery of library materials and resources.
  • Guides library patrons in the effective use of technology including one-on-one and group support of tablet, phone, e-readers, and other electronic devices.
  • Actively represents and promotes the library with the goal of increasing public use and awareness through programs, presentations, workshops, library tours and field trips. Establishes and maintains joint partnerships. 
  • Develops and delegates marketing materials, web content, social media and displays to promote library programs and services.
  • Provides customer service, circulation duties, technology assistance and reader's advisory for patrons from diverse backgrounds at a busy public service desk (approximately 6-8 hours/week).
  • Provides in-house library programs and services including afterschool, makerspace, and literacy activities for all ages. 
  • Responsible for collection development of outreach materials including purchasing, cataloguing, evaluating and weeding.
  • Utilizes technology and various applications daily for programming, marketing, and administrative duties.
  • Serves as a liaison on different cross community boards, district and Town committees.
  • Serves as part of a collaborative, effective team: acts as a staff resource in area of specialty; creates statistical reports; participates in strategic planning and work plan creation and implementation.
  • Recommends budget, equipment and supply purchases.
  • Regularly acts as Person In Charge of the library.
  • Performs other duties as required and necessary to ensure the success of the organization.

Ideal Candidate:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY 
  • Ability to consistently promote, work, and act in a manner in support of the Library’s and Town’s vision, mission and values. 
  • Ability to safely operate vehicles, navigate using maps, understand basic mechanical vehicle systems and effectively manage vehicular emergencies. 
  • Confidence in public speaking and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of standard library operating procedures, methods and philosophies. 
  • Background knowledge of literature, media and library services.
  • Strong customer service skills; ability to work with and relate to all ages, identities and backgrounds. 
  • Ability and experience in providing story times, programs and public presentations to groups of varying ages.
  • Knowledge of various reading levels and materials for youth. 
  • Working knowledge of the library's computer system and the Internet.
  • Ability to use computer software to prepare materials for marketing and promotion. 
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with library and town coworkers. 
  • Ability to perform job duties during relaxed or stressed activity levels within the library and at community sites. 
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, meet deadlines and to constructively problem solve.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience
  • One (I) year of progressively responsible library or related field experience required. This is in addition to any years used to satisfy the education requirement.
  • Experience providing customer service to diverse individuals and groups is preferred.
  • Spanish language proficiency is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
Education
  • A Bachelor's Degree is required. 
  • A Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), Library and Information Science (MLIS) or in related field such as Public Administration, Education, or Social Work is preferred.
Additional Requirements/License/Certifications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record. 
  • Passing a driving record (MVR), references and criminal history background check will be required prior to the start of employment.
  • Must be able to provide documentation that proves eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship.
