Summary of Function:
Under general direction, performs professional and administrative tasks related to the operation of the Teen Services Department, including planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating library services. Supervises Teen Services Librarian staff. Provides customer service including reference and readers’ advisory; technology training and assistance; collection management; and program planning and delivery for teen library patrons. Conducts outreach to and builds relationships with local teen-serving organizations and schools.
Job Functions:
- Oversees all activities of the Teen Services Department.
- Hires Teen Services staff in consultation with the Director and other department heads.
- Supervises and evaluates the performance of the Teen Services staff.
- Provides training and training opportunities for departmental staff.
- Provides input in developing the library’s annual budget.
- Manages the departmental budget.
- Develops and proposes relevant policies and procedures.
- Compiles, reports, and evaluates statistics.
- Oversees programming for teens, including the Teen Advisory Board and teen summer reading program.
- Oversees and supports teen volunteers.
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to the public in person, by phone, and email.
- Participates in collection management for the YA collections, including purchase requests, weeding, and inventory.
- Trains and assists patrons in the use of library equipment and technology.
- Conducts bibliographic instruction and tours.
- Promotes the library’s resources and services through displays, articles, and other means.
- Helps maintain the content of the relevant sections of the website and social media outlets.
- Conducts outreach to relevant community organizations and schools.
- Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations and forms productive relationships with other local agencies.
- Attends professional meetings, conferences, and training sessions for professional development.
- Initiates, participates, and collaborates in the library profession beyond MRLD.
- Initiates, participates, and collaborates with MRLD staff on projects and committees.
- Participates in activities such as staff meetings, committee work, and trainings.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. A Master’s Degree in Library Science accredited from ALA is preferred. Three years’ progressively responsible experience working as a library professional is required. Supervisory experience is preferred. Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to train and supervise library staff.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent reference skills and ability to relate to patrons of all ages.
- Ability to employ effective search strategies with both print and electronic resources.
- Knowledge of online library catalogs, Internet search tools, online reference sources, Microsoft Windows and Office applications, and related technologies is required.
- Knowledge of electronic resources including subscription databases, mobile technologies, and social media is strongly preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively. Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred.
- Able to build strong working relationships, internal and external to the organization.
- High level of interpersonal skills and integrity.
- High level of customer service skills.
- Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.

Montrose Regional Library District is seeking a full-time dynamic librarian to supervise the Teen Services Department. The Head of Teen Services is responsible for supervising the Teen Services staff; developing and implementing programs for teens with direction from the Teen Advisory Board; and conducting outreach to relevant community organizations and schools. An ideal candidate welcomes the opportunity for autonomy and creativity; is empathetic to the teen experience; and is enthusiastic about developing youth leadership potential. This position requires collaboration in library-wide projects and initiatives, including the development of policies, serving on committees, and contributing to the strategic planning process. Teen Services staff also assists the public at the reference desk, provides technology assistance, and conducts reader’s advisory.

The starting rate for the Head of Teen Services is $51,700 annually, with an additional increase for a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or related field) from an ALA-accredited university; we will also provide a salary increase for proficiency in Spanish.
