This is professional full-time position requiring an MLS degree from an ALA accredited university. The Youth Services Librarian is responsible to the Director and will carry out all aspects of services to children (infants, preschool and school age) through young adult.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning and presenting programming for children and young adults
- Performing general maintenance of the children’s collection
- Designing and staging displays in the children’s room to promote materials and programs
- Assisting children, parents and young adults with reference questions and readers advisory
- Conducts school visitations (on and off-site) and participates in community outreach events
- Suggests appropriate books for purchase to the Director
- Represents the Library at appropriate State and Regional meetings
- Provides computer instruction on individual/small-group basis
- Composing and submitting announcements to the media
- Keeping statistics for the Library Director and the Office of Library and Information Services Annual Report
- Suggestion of content and design of library’s youth webpages to the Library Director
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
· Knowledge of children and young adult literature and materials
· Knowledge of children and young adult programming skills
· Awareness of current trends in library services for children and young adult services
· Excellent customer service skills
· Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
· Able to interact effectively with the staff and patrons of all ages
· Working knowledge of computer applications (not limited to Microsoft Suite and Canva)
· Able to work some nights and weekends
Salary commensurate with experience, includes health insurance.
Minimum qualifications:
- MLS from an ALA accredited university.
- At least three years of experience working with children in a library, educational, or youth development setting.
- Experience designing and presenting innovative programs for youth strongly preferred.
- Good work ethic: punctuality in reporting for work, organizational skills, thoroughness in work completion, attention to detail, and initiative.
- Usual office working conditions. Potential minimal exposure to noise, dust, inclement weather, temperature fluctuations.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and talk for potentially long periods of time. This includes using a computer monitor, monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse to complete many of the daily tasks as well as usual office equipment.
