Position Summary
The Mattapoisett Free Public Library seeks an enthusiastic and creative Part-Time Children’s Librarian to support youth services for children and families.
Working under the supervision of the Head Children’s Librarian/Assistant Director, the Part-Time Children’s Librarian assists with the planning and presentation of children’s programming, including storytimes and special events; provides readers’ advisory and reference services for children and caregivers; and supports the development and promotion of the children’s collection.
The successful candidate will enjoy working with children and families, have strong customer service skills, and contribute positively to a collaborative staff environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Programming & Youth Services

Plan and present programs for children and families

Assist with seasonal programming such as Summer Reading

Support special events, performers, and family programs

Promote early literacy and encourage lifelong reading
Public Service

Provide reader’s advisory and reference assistance for children and caregivers

Assist patrons in locating materials and using library resources

Provide basic technology assistance to patrons
-
Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for families
Collection Support

Assist with maintaining and promoting the children’s collection

Help create displays and booklists

Assist with weeding and identifying materials for replacement or addition
Collaboration

Work closely with the Head Children’s Librarian to support youth services goals

Assist with outreach efforts when needed

Participate in staff meetings and library initiatives as appropriate
Schedule
19.5 hours per week. This schedule includes some evening hours and weekends.
Compensation
Hourly position. Salary range: $28.68 – $29.84 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Required
-
Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) or progress toward the degree

Experience working with children in an educational, library, or community setting

Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

Ability to communicate effectively with children, caregivers, and colleagues

Knowledge of children’s literature and early literacy practices
