The Community
History Colorado\'s artifacts and original documentary materials are central to our educational and interpretive mission. The collection spans curatorial disciplines and typologies and, while recognizing there are issues and collecting goals unique to each curatorial area, staff works collaboratively to research, document, and preserve the people, places, and stories of Colorado history. History Colorado collects in three main areas: artifacts, archives, and photography. The History Colorado collection currently comprises approximately 200,000 artifacts, over 850,000 photographs, and 8,500 linear feet of textual and archival materials. The Photography Department manages both the photography and moving image collections. The photography collection includes images and negatives that span Colorado and western U.S. history from the 1840s to the present, ranging from early daguerreotypes and glass plate negatives to digital prints, and from snapshots to masterworks of photographic art. Among the strengths of the collection are holdings from photographer William Henry Jackson and the Detroit Publishing Company with which he was affiliated, the Aultman Studio of Trinidad, and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad (D&RGRR). The department also collects moving image film on a selective basis. Additionally, the Archives department collects and processes photographs in collaboration with the Photography Department. Please visit historycolorado.org for more information about the collection.
