The Youth Librarian position is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing library services, programs and outreach, within the library and for the community. This position leads and supports the district’s mission and core values. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative. |

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in a library and office environment, on multiple workstations, tasks, software programs and projects. Work may also be performed in a virtual or contact center environment. Work requires frequent physical activity, close visual work, and computer use; with regular proximity to automated handling equipment, limited exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, and occasional exposure to chemicals, mold or foreign substances. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, moderate exposure to behavior issues, and may require moderate travel. Requires varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically.
Working knowledge of the professional principles of youth services to include reference and readers’ advisory tools and methodologies, including print and electronic sources is required.
- Working knowledge of children's collections and programming is required.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude toward staff and patrons of all ages in all contact environments.
- Requires the ability to work under periods of occasional stress resulting from peak periods of patron service requests.
- Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in skills, functions and technologies required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned.
- Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.
- Must demonstrate competency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 35 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.
- Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to:Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, read a minimum 8 point font, and work at computer workstations, frequently. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, and grip up to 15 pounds, kneel, squat and climb, on a regular basis. On a limited basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
