Assistant Professor / Faculty Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services

Kraemer Family Library, University of Colorado Colorado Springs

The Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) seeks applications from energetic, innovative librarians for Faculty Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services. As a member of the Collection Management team, this position plays an integral role in maintaining the library’s catalog and provides collegial leadership, direction, vision and management of the cataloging and metadata services. This tenure track position also includes general reference desk duties, library instruction, collection development and liaison duties with selected academic departments, participation in library policy formulation, university and professional service, and research and creative work. 

Appointment and Salary: The successful candidate for this position will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-track faculty member. Salary range is $55,000-$65,000, depending upon qualifications. 

Position Responsibilities:

Reports to: Director of Collections Management

Teaching/Librarianship responsibilities are to:

  1. Perform adaptive and original cataloging in all formats
  2. Keep abreast of current and emerging trends, issues, and methods of electronic resources management and metadata standards
  3. Provide, monitor, and manage proper cataloging standards and procedures for all materials
  4. Perform supervisory responsibilities
  5. Serve on a variety of internal and external committees
  6. Manage the operation of the OCLC Cataloging System and implements changes and enhancements
  7. Develop, articulate, and interpret the department’s goals
  8. Serve on the library’s Leadership Team
  9. Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in librarianship/teaching, research, professional practice, and service through continuing activity as a librarian/teacher and scholar
  10. Provide general reference services (May include nights and weekends)
  11. Develop the collections, provide individual, group, or course-related instruction, serve as department liaison, and assist students and faculty in selected subject areas 

Research, service and other responsibilities are to:

  1. Participate in the development of library-wide policies, procedures, and goals
  2. Serve on committees, submit reports, and undertakes special projects as specified by the Faculty Director of Collections Management or the Library Dean
  3. Participate in conferences and contribute to the profession through publications, presentations, etc.
  4. Meet the requirements of the tenure track which includes participating in scholarly activities such as research projects, publications, and presentations in addition to providing service to the library, university, and profession
Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school
  • Experience in cataloging standards (three years or more cataloging experience preferred)
  • Experience using cataloging resources including an integrated library system, OCLC Connexion and MarcEdit.               
  • Supervisory experience (three years or more preferred)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using a library integrated library system (specifically Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Sierra system)
  • Understanding of library data encoding standards such as MARC21, RDA, etc.
  • Understanding of technological trends and developments relevant to academic libraries
  • Experience working with and assisting library users in finding information (preferably both face-to-face and remotely) in a library setting
  • Experience in an academic library
  • Evidence of professional development activities, including research and participation in professional organizations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and methods of access and discovery to scholarly resources
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer service attitude

The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado was established in 1965. The student population is approximately 11,300. The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado is a comprehensive baccalaureate and specialized graduate research university with selective admission standards.
