Job Description

The City of Littleton's Bemis Public Library is seeking Substitute Circulation Clerks.

The Substitute Circulation Clerk provides extraordinary customer service to library patrons. They are often the first point of contact for library patrons and are responsible for creating a positive initial impression of the library, resolving questions and issues regarding patron accounts, and providing general information about the library.  They are tasked with the efficient and accurate circulation of library materials, which includes the checking in and out of library materials, arranging library materials on shelving carts, and shelving library materials.

This is an on-call position involving evening and weekend hours. This position does not qualify for benefits. 

Essential Duties & Reponsibilities:

  • Greets patrons upon their arrival at the circulation desk;
  • Checks out library materials to patrons according to established written procedures using the SIRSI integrated library system and a RFID pad. Resolves circulation issues and questions in person, by telephone, and by email. Transfers phone calls to appropriate personnel and/or department. Registers patrons for library cards by verifying patron identification and entering identification information into the SIRSI database.
  • Retrieves library materials from automated sorter bins and arranges them on appropriate carts according to an established sequence for shelving.
  • Collects fines for overdue, damaged and lost library materials from library patrons. Deposits checks and cash into cash register and makes change for patrons, providing receipts upon request. Updates account balance on patron account.
  • Monitors the quality of the library collection by visually inspecting materials during sorting and shelving.
  • Contacts patrons by telephone and e-mail regarding returned items that are damaged or missing parts.
  • Shelves library materials.
  • Visually scans shelved materials to maintain the integrity, continuity, and usefulness of the collection.
  • Processes reserved items by printing a report, removing reserved items from shelves, checking in the reserved items, shelving the reserved items on the hold shelves, and phoning patrons (those without email) that their reserved items are available to pick up.
  • Processes books for courier to return to other libraries.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Solid knowledge of the principles of filing library materials according to the Dewey Decimal library filing system and the ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Solid knowledge of general library principles and procedures and the ability to apply those principles and procedures to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Solid knowledge and skills using an integrated library system.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operation, basic skills in computer operation, and the ability to access and retrieve needed information using the computer.
  • Ability to effectively and courteously communicate and interact with patrons and staff members who request information and services. Patrons may occasionally be angry, argumentative, or disagreeable.
  • Ability to establish and conduct verbal communications through speaking, talking, and hearing.
