Department Information
The Library and Cultural Services Departments vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of Aurorans.  We have two divisions within the department: Library and Cultural Services, both offering a variety of free programs and services to the community.

Position Information

The City of Aurora's Library and Cultural Services Department is looking for a Library Clerk - Security Guard to provide the highest level of customer service.   This position has dual functionality serving primarily as Library Clerk assisting customers with general service questions, library circulation services and shelving AND monitoring the premise for security/safety, and professionally responding and reporting on security/customer behavioral issues.  Wears security apparel and related equipment (unarmed).  Works proactively with customers, including teens and youth, to reduce the need for disciplinary security actions.  Provides high quality friendly service assisting customers with library circulation services and other library duties.  This position works primarily at the Martin Luther King, Jr Branch 9898 E. Colfax Ave and secondarily as needed, at the Hoffman Branch 1298 Peoria Street.   This position may be called, on occasion but not likely, to work at other Aurora Library locations for brief periods. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday anytime within the hours of 9am - 9pm.


The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email
  • Conducts general office/administrative/clerical tasks as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
Security Focus:
  • Functions as Library facility/public security monitor and provides basic customer assistance
  • Monitors library facilities during open public hours
  • Moves throughout the building both inside and outside on an ongoing basis providing a visible and professional presence in customer areas, observes customer activity, tactfully enforces library customer conduct policies, inspects and reports vandalism and suspicious activity
  • Checks doors and non-public areas to ensure they are secure, escorts staff into and out of the building as requested
  • Is available while on duty via cell phone and internal radio system to assist staff with difficult customers or with other security concerns
  • Consults with supervisory staff for direction on actions to be taken in non-emergency situations
  • Reports and calls police independently during an emergency situation, does not detain, restrain or physically touch customers outside of life threatening situations
  • Files and assists with completing incident reports
  • Works with staff, contract guard services and/or police to assist in incident investigations as needed
  • Observes security cameras as needed
  • Works proactively and engages with teens and youth in positive activities within the facility to prevent negative behavior.
Service Desk Focus:
  • Checks books/other items in and out through computerized system
  • Answers general customer questions regarding library policy, procedures and customer accounts
  • Answers basic reference, reader's advisory and general customer questions
  • Redirects more advanced reference questions to Reference staff as appropriate
  • Operates a cash register, conducts customer payment transactions, maintains a cash drawer
  • Performs data entry into library system, spreadsheet and other databases
  • Sorts, processes, shelves and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties
  • Assists with research and programs as needed
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly)

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: At least 6 months of direct customer service in a retail, service or hospitality industry preferred.   

Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record.

 

Working Conditions

 

Physical Demands:

  • Light to sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard
  • Vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and customers

Work Environment:
  • Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors making building check rounds or assisting with outdoor programs/events
Equipment Used:
  • Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, copiers and microfilm equipment
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
