Job Description

SUMMARY:

Responsible for the management, selection, processing and preservation of books, manuscripts, archives, photographs and other materials within Special Collections and Archives. Selects materials for other academic subject areas as assigned. Provides assistance to individuals or groups locating and assessing information resources. Reports to Head of Technical Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Manages the daily operations of the Special Collections and University Archives unit.

• In consultation with supervisor, provides vision and goals for the unit and sets priorities.

• Selects, accessions, processes, and deaccessions archival collections and produces finding aids.

• Catalogs archival materials using national metadata standards.

• Identifies, digitizes, catalogs and contributes content to the digital repository using DSpace.

• Develops general collections as liaison to assigned academic departments.

• Participates in committee work.

• Promotes use of collections through classroom instruction, displays, outreach, public presentations, tours, exhibitions, and marketing materials.

• Provides research assistance to patrons using Special Collections and Archives materials.

• Develops Web information including LibGuides, tutorials, and unit pages.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruits, selects, trains, and supervises interns and student workers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:

• Master's degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Studies from an ALA accredited institution.

• Minimum of three years of professional experience in special collections/archives performing duties such as appraising, accessioning, processing, preserving and providing access to archival collections. Proficiency using MS Office software such as Word and Excel.

• Proven record of strong service orientation and positive interpersonal skills.

• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems with effective attention to detail.

• Demonstrates good judgment in decision making.

PREFERRED:

• Coursework relevant to archival management such as from library school or SAA. Knowledge of and experience using standards such as DACS, EAD, DCRM, MARC, and Dublin Core. Proficiency using software such as OCLC, an ILS such as III Sierra, and a digital repository such as DSpace.
