Job Description

DEFINITION: Provides direct supervision of professional, technical, and administrative positions, employees and functions within the Technical Services unit of the Library.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Plan, organize, and direct activities in an assigned service section of the Library including quality control, service responsiveness, materials, and program development. Supervise technical services activities. Serve at the public service desks by providing direct services to patrons; locating desired information or library materials using electronic databases and resources, the Internet, print library materials, other reference tools or contacts with other libraries. Interview customer in person, on the phone or via text, chat or instant messaging to determine needs. Accompany or direct patrons to the appropriate resources both printed and electronic. Assist and instruct patrons in the use of computer software and hardware; electronic resources and the Internet. Encourage staff in making the Library more user friendly for patrons and responsive to new and changing needs. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff including evaluating performance, enhancing employee development and skill building, training, and recommending employee actions as required. Schedule and ensure proper staff coverage in assigned section for all shifts including evenings and weekends. Participate in the selection process to hire new staff members including analyzing organizational needs, selection criteria, and interviewing best candidates. Prepare written reports and documents in support of major Library programs and functions. This may include examples of complex research or program development projects. Direct use and development of information technology applications appropriate for assigned section of materials to meet the customer service needs of the Library. May select books and materials for an assigned portion of the collection, and manage a portion of the acquisitions budget. Provide training opportunities and development in internal operational procedures for staff as required. Assist in budget and policy development for section and the Library including routine monitoring of budget status and modification of spending as required. Perform job duties and other collaborative efforts in pursuit of City values and major organizational goals. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public. Respond to and resolve customer inquiries and complaints related to personnel and/or Library services. Serve as duty supervisor on a rotating schedule to provide facility, functional, and operational supervision coverage on evenings and weekends. Explain and enforce the Library Rules of Conduct to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the library.

Depending upon assignment, may also perform these Essential Duties:
Maintain the Library’s public computer networks and assist in maintenance of all staff computers that may include basic-level programming, purchasing of related computer and peripheral equipment, troubleshooting, and developing computer related policies. Coordinate, supervise, and train Library volunteers, community service workers, and manage the volunteer and community service programs. Update criteria and job availability for both programs. Participate in and represent the library on citywide and community committees. Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.

Regular full-time with benefits.  Mon-Fri with evening and weekend hours as required.

Performance at this level requires advanced customer service skills, knowledge of library operations, and sufficient knowledge to provide competent reference assistance.  Spanish-English bilingual skills proficiency desired.

The Community

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is done in a standard library environment, which includes exposure to dust. Work requires standing, walking, bending and stooping, use of hands to make repetitive grasping motions, light lifting of up to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling of book carts, and sufficient vision to clearly read book labels. May require climbing at least two steps on a ladder or step stool and reaching above shoulder level. Work requires ability to hear and communicate orally with library patrons. Work requires repetitive motion to enter data on keyboard. Irregular work schedule required including days, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Work frequently involves confidentiality, reasoning, problem solving, and attention to detail.
