Job Description

Douglas County Libraries is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to join Douglas County Libraries Youth Services Department. The Youth Librarian position is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing library services, programs and outreach, within the library and for the community. This position leads and supports the district's mission and core values. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.

1-26 hour position
1-32 hour position

Our ideal candidate

·         Will take ownership of the customer experience by embracing new technologies, modifying the collection to meet patron needs, looking for new ways to reach customers outside the library, and creating a sense of discovery and exploration in the branch. Performs story times using the ALA Every Child Ready to Read early literacy skills. Encourages caregivers to build on the skills.

·         Anticipates trends that will impact libraries, literacy, publishing, and information technology. Embraces innovation and experimentation. Recommends thoughtful change to help the district stay relevant and vital.

·         Effectively assists patrons of all ages by providing professional library reference and readers' advisory services.  Assists patrons in using reference tools, conducting in-depth research, locating materials and managing accounts. Instructs patrons in the use of resources across formats and platforms.

·         Stays abreast of new research and trends in the teaching of reading, children's learning styles, child development, and parenting styles in order to provide practical advice to parents or guardians.

·         Serves as a community speaker on the topic of children's literature and early literacy. Advocates the role of the library in increasing children's and young adults' desire to read for recreational and educational purposes.

·         Demonstrates interest in current events and community concerns, and a command of numerous subject areas to assist patrons and staff with their inquiries.

·         Builds relationships through exceptional patron service and ongoing outreach to individuals and organizations in our community. Acknowledges patrons, helps them at their point of need, partners with them to meet their goal and follows up.
