Job Description

NATURE OF THE WORK The Education & Reference Librarian assists in the planning, coordination, and promotion of the education and reference programs of the library. Primary emphasis will be to plan, design and teach classes and demonstrations and to provide general and unique library reference services needed by library patrons. Close interaction occurs with key users and individual faculty members of all the schools on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. This position participates in professional development activities and serves on various library committees, including the Library’s Teaching Team and Ask Us Team. SUPERVISION The Education & Reference Librarian reports to the Head of Education and Reference. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES The Education & Reference Librarian has no supervisory responsibilities. This position has no routine supervisory responsibilities but may oversee the work of students, volunteers or other staff on committee work, specific projects or as requested. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Education & Reference Librarian plans, designs, and teaches in-person and virtual instructional programs and provides in-person and virtual reference services. Responsibilities include: Serve on the Teaching Team and assist in educational program planning, delivery, management, and innovation, specifically in teaching PubMed, CINAHL, and other traditional and emerging health sciences research sources Seek opportunities to collaborate with CU Anschutz Medical Campus faculty to increase library involvement in the curricula of the campus Assist in creation and maintenance of department and Library Web pages, resource guides, and online tutorials Assist in developing policies, setting priorities, and recommending improvements to the overall provision of core and emerging education and reference services Provide core reference services both in-person and by virtual means using online chat, email, and telephone Perform professional fee-based bibliographic literature searches using library databases, the Web, and other resources Perform consultations with individuals or small groups on topics related to library resources or citation and document management Participate as a library liaison in the School of Medicine’s Mentored Scholarly Activity program Participate in and assist with the development, implementation, coordination, promotion, and assessment of the library liaison program Monitor trends in health sciences librarianship such as evidence-based practice, Web 2.0 tools, and social networking technology Collaborate with other librarians and staff concerning library programs and services Cultivate partnerships and collaborate with library and university personnel on projects including grants papers, poster presentations, or other creative undertaking Represent the library on university, state, and regional committees and consortia Participate in professional development activities PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The Education & Reference Librarian is expected to assume personal responsibility for designing and implementing a plan for continuing professional development and to actively contribute to the development of health sciences librarianship through scholarly and service activities.

FACULTY STATUS CU Anschutz Medical Campus Health Sciences Library faculty members serve as non-tenure track faculty.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS •Coursework in adult education, instructional design, or educational technology •Experience with educational technology tools, including course management software such as Blackboard •Knowledge of innovative applications of technology to deliver reference and instructional services •Knowledge of biomedical print materials and online information resources and databases •Experience working in a health sciences, academic, research, life sciences, related-field special library, or previous experience in a health profession •Strong searching skills in health sciences and related information resources and tools, especially the ability to search MEDLINE and demonstrate an understanding of Medical Subject Headings •Essential personal characteristics include flexibility, initiative, dependability, creativity, and the ability to work cooperatively in an evolving technological environment •Experience with evidence based health care and health informatics concepts and resources •Excellent problem solving skills •Experience providing virtual and face-to-face library reference services •Knowledge of or experience providing clinical librarianship duties •Experience with Web 2.0 tools; (OR working knowledge of blogs, wikis, online gaming environments, podcasting RSS and other Web-related technologies) •Undergraduate or advanced degree in the health or basic sciences •Experience with the activities, duties, and responsibilities in a library liaison program •Knowledge of mobile/smart phone and other emerging technologies and their use in libraries
