Job Description

Background Information: This is an exciting opportunity to impact children and families in Denver as the leader of the Early Literacy Department. The successful candidate will draw upon his/her own knowledge in support of Denver Public Library’s Community Impact Statement: Children from birth are immersed in literacy–rich environments where they discover the joy of reading and learning, motivating them to achieve and graduate from high school. This position is critical in preparing staff to share the early literacy message with parents and caregivers in partnership with other entities serving children in the community. This position also assists other staff in enhancing in-house storytimes and directing the highly successful Read-Aloud program. Duties and Responsibilities: Creates lifelong learners by ensuring high quality early literacy experiences. Develops programs and services for 0-5 year olds and their adults. Identifies and implements emerging opportunities to move the early literacy portion of the Community Impact Statement goal forward. Oversees daily operations of the early literacy department including personnel, scheduling, budgeting and customer service. Trains, coaches, mentors and motivates staff and volunteers. Communicates effectively with customers, staff, and administration. Coordinates department’s work with other library departments and City agencies. Builds relationships and collaborates with community partners around early literacy issues and concerns. Supports a culture of early literacy throughout the community. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of early literacy best practices in community settings. Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiatives and the materials/resources that support it. Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence and current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Skill in providing strong, passionate and compassionate leadership. Skill in the recruitment, selection, training and motivation of a brilliant staff and a diverse group of dedicated volunteers. Ability to model a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to communicate effectively with both individuals and groups. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Experience: Two years of experience in providing service to children and families focusing on early literacy within the library or in the community. Proven track record of training, coaching and mentoring staff and volunteers. Proven supervisory and project management experience. Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program. Special Requirements: A background check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made.
