Job Description

An employee in this position assists in managing the activities of the entire library and may serve in the absence of the Director and the Deputy Director.

Employee performs complex administrative and advanced professional library work in organizing and directing Collection Development and overseeing the innovative adoption of technologies and the maintenance of basic technology services. This includes direct supervision of two department heads: Technical Services and Computer Services. This position works with the Division Manager for Youth Services to distribute collection funds as appropriate. This position oversees the ordering of materials for adults and analyzes collection use to ensure customer demands are met through efficient use of funds and processes. Coordinates Collection Management activities for the system including selection and deselection of print, non-print, AV, and electronic materials. Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Computer Services Manager to ensure the efficient delivery of computing and related services for the functioning of the system. Works with the Computer Services Manager to assess services and evaluate new electronic services. Coordinates the Innovation Review Team. Works cooperatively with other staff in planning and development of new services to ensure the library maintains a progressive offering of services and programs that meet the changing needs of our customers. Works with the Training Coordinator to ensure systematic training for new technologies. Recommends upgrades and provides input on the budget regarding new technologies. Serves on the Director’s Management Team, Director’s Advisory Council, Public Services Management Council and other related councils, committees, and task forces. Keeps pace with current public library service trends and developments which may impact library services, resources, and operations. Writes grants and/or collaborates in the writing of grants with the other Division Managers of Marketing and Communication to enhance library resources and operations.

Additional Info & Requirements

Selected applicant must have or obtain, and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; must have access to transportation; background check with local law enforcement agency required; and must submit to a drug-screening test and receive a negative result for the use of drugs specified in the county policy. Refusal to submit to testing or a confirmed positive test shall be basis for withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.

Must have five years’ experience as a MLS professional librarian in a public library system including three years library supervisory experience working with all levels of library personnel.

Trainee: Trainee candidates must have at least 4 ½ years’ experience as a MLS professional librarian in a public library and 2 ½ years of library supervisory experience working with all levels of library personnel.
