Job Description

In this role, you will contribute to meeting the Metadata Services Department’s goals by responding flexibly and imaginatively to the evolving demands placed on the Department. At the core of your responsibilities will be to add, update, and maintain bibliographic records for e-books in the OCLC database and in the libraries' catalog, both individually and using batch processes. Additional primary responsibilities will include retrieving, editing, and batchloading files, copy cataloging, and catalog database maintenance. You may also assist the Access and Discovery unit with troubleshooting access and ownership issues for e-books.

E-book Batch Loading

  • Identify, evaluate, retrieve, batch edits, and batch load MARC records to the catalog from various sources including OCLC WorldShare and vendors.
  • Update and maintain documentation and procedures for batch processing, including those associated with OCLC WorldShare, MarcEdit, and Sierra’s Data Exchange. 
  • Develop procedures for records from new sources or in response to changes to tools.
  • Communicate changes and their impacts to the Metadata Services Department and those working with catalog records in other departments.
  • Identify, investigate, and solve isolated and systematic data integrity or quality problems.
  • Prioritize issues such as missing records or poor-quality records, based on input from Acquisitions and Collection Development librarians and staff.

E-book Cataloging

  • Identify, update, and add to the libraries catalog bibliographic records for individual e-books. Enhance and derive new bibliographic records in the OCLC database for e-books. Update bibliographic metadata for e-book collections in OCLC WorldShare.
  • Prioritize individual e-book cataloging based on guidelines and informed by patterns observed in batch loaded collections. 
  • Recommend changes to priorities and guidelines based on patterns observed in batch loaded collections and access issues reported.

Database Maintenance

  • Assist Serials and E-resources Cataloging Manager and Database Integrity and Identity Management Coordinator with database maintenance processes and projects.

Digital Projects

  • Assist Metadata Coordinator with non-MARC metadata and metadata transformation. Help identify appropriate tools for metadata transformation and assists with training and documentation for using these tools (such as MarcEdit or OpenRefine).

What we require: 

  • Must be a current Colorado resident.
  • Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

What you will need: 

  • Ability to advocate and cultivate an environment of diversity, inclusion, and respect.
  • Ability to read and interpret cataloging standards, policies, and procedures; experience working with or using electronic publications.
  • Ability to work with materials in multiple languages other than English.

What we would like you have:

  • At least two years of experience cataloging (may substitute coursework in cataloging for one year of experience) or working with catalog records in a related capacity.
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards, including AACR2 and RDA.
  • Familiarity with OCLC Connexion, OCLC WorldShare Collection Manager, and III Sierra or other ILS cataloging functions.
  • Experience using MarcEdit.
  • Familiarity with regular expressions. 
  • Experience cataloging or managing e-resources.
