Job Description

Are you a dynamic leader who prioritizes customer service and providing access to cutting edge technology? Then look no further than this opportunity on the Western Slope of Colorado.  You'll lead a creative team and oversee services at Mesa County Libraries 970West Studio, a community recording studio. In addition, you'll manage public technology access and the call center for the Central Library along with your 8-member team. We are looking for an individual with a strong aptitude for technology, providing a wide range of services from basic computer and printing assistance to high end sound and video recording equipment. The successful candidate will enjoy working with people, thinking creatively, managing multiple creative projects and building strategic relationships with community members. As a member of the management team, you will provide input and direction in accomplishing MCL’s mission to enrich lives and build community through opportunities to learn, discover, create and connect.

POSITION TITLE:  Creative Technology Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs all duties related to managing Technology Services 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works independently under the supervision of the Associate Director
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Technology Specialists, Studio Coordinator, Library Assistants

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversee Technology Services: Ensure that expert friendly assistance is provided at public computer desk, call center and at the studio. Schedule personnel and resources, organize and establish center priorities, and coordinate activities for optimum patron benefit. Oversee public computer use at the Central Library so that patrons get reliable and equitable access to Internet and computer resources. Ensure that all calls are handled in a friendly knowledgeable manner and transferring less than 20% of calls. Work with other managers and staff to coordinate computer and meeting room procedures so that patrons throughout Mesa County receive consistent high-level service. Coordinate the scheduling of Central Library study rooms. Maintain an expertise in patron technology; implement, maintain, and coordinate equipment, devices and software so that patrons have access to the resources they need to learn, discover, create, and connect. Handle problems, concerns, and emergencies in a professional manner and according to library policies and procedures.


 

  1. 970West Studio: Offer innovative services and resources through the 970 West Studio that meet the ever-changing needs of artists by monitoring trends and connecting with our local creative community. Manage the use and priorities of studio equipment and space with the intent of best serving the community and patrons. Coordinate classes and training for patrons on the software, hardware, and equipment at their disposal while using the 970West Studio. Facilitate studio reservations in such a manner that it promotes equitable use of the space for all eligible patrons. Ensure studio procedures are reasonable, equitable, and efficient. Partner with community organizations for outreach, production and opportunities to promote the 970West Studio and its services. Identify, coordinate and assist with content creation projects for the Library. Organize, plan, and delegate duties for the various stages of these projects within the department. Work with other departments as necessary to ensure that metadata and other information is collected so the finished product may be added to our digital repository and catalog. Maintain professional standards when working with external contacts on projects whether they are a partner or the subject. Be able to complete projects within a fixed timeframe so as to meet internal and external deadlines. Research, select, order, and maintain all digital media equipment for the library and 970West Studio and follow the manufacturer’s recommended use and care procedures. Train other staff as necessary in the basics of audio/visual equipment operation.


 

  1. Supervise Staff: Develop Essential Functions and Performance Standards for TS staff. Provide feedback on an ongoing basis and evaluate each employee annually. Hire and train new staff to be able to accomplish assigned objectives. Develop staff with coaching, and ongoing training opportunities so that they continue to grow and learn in their positions. Address employee performance problems in a proactive direct manner. Work with staff to create one cohesive team throughout the library district. Ensure that staff members attend staff meetings and trainings including monthly meetings, computer trainings, Library 101 and staff development day. Also ensure that all staff members complete the library technology competencies within the first year of being hired. Conduct regular department meetings and maintain current training documents and department procedures. Work with other managers to provide cross-training for staff members so that staff have a better understanding and knowledge of other departments and library operations.


 

  1. Management Team: Participate in the Library District’s management team. Work with other managers to develop needed policies and procedures for the library, and interpret these for staff and patrons. Serve as an example for all staff in providing library service and communicating expectations. Stay current on library issues and trends. Actively participate and contribute to various library committees and activities. Write monthly and annual department reports and others as needed. Make annual presentations to the Library Board of Trustees and other to organizations when appropriate. Maintain a fully trained staff and help insure that minimum staffing priorities are met district-wide. Work with community organizations to enhance and promote library services. Take on other projects and tasks that assist the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.


 

  1. Self-development and Expertise: Develop and maintain a general working knowledge of all hardware and software used throughout the library district. Develop an expertise of multi-media equipment used in creating digital content. Keep up to date with industry standards and trends in digital production. Attend monthly staff meetings and training; attend external trainings and conferences, stay aware of activities via staff wiki, email and regular communication with colleagues.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education or training associated with the completion of a four-year degree in college, vocational or technical school courses of study related to the area of assignment, or three years’ previous library experience or retail customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Two to three years’ supervisory experience preferred.
