Job Description

Performs a variety of mid-level professional duties within the Children’s Division under the direction of the Division Manager, including program development and management, staff training, collection development, and interacting with a diverse population and will direct the Children’s Division in the absence of the Division Manager. Flexible schedule requires some evening and weekend hours. 

The salary range for this position is $22.07- $31.97 per hour with a hiring range of $22.07 - $27.02, depending on qualifications and experience. 
Position will close to applicants on: 7/16/21 at 12 P.M. M.S.T.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides exceptional customer service by searching for and retrieving information to answer questions posed in person, by phone, email, and IM.
  • Plans, promotes, and implements large scale events, general programming and the Summer Learning Program.
  • Contributes to and creates children’s marketing materials, graphics, and performs webpage updates in collaboration with other departments.
  • Supervise Division in absence of Division Manager, including hiring, training, and evaluating Assistant Librarians. Supports division staff in professional goals and helps share professional development opportunities.
  • Provides administrative support with division scheduling, budget management, fund requests and grant writing.
  • Develops & maintains digital Media collection for Children’s Division that enhances the children’s collection, protects intellectual freedom, and provides access to diverse points of view.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with the library’s Communications Coordinator and champions communication across a variety of platforms including social, digital, print.
  • Represents division on City and library committees and collaborates with community partners to sustain and implement key initiatives.
  • Develops and compiles analytic reports using a variety of tools to support evidence-based decisions and makes recommendations for program improvement.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

This position is responsible for supervision of City employee(s). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including assists with scheduling, training development and evaluation of staff. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Spanish language skills highly desirable.  Ability to work with and relate to young children, youth and their caregivers.  Working knowledge of the library’s computer system and the Internet.  Knowledge of standard library operating procedures, methods and philosophies.  Background and knowledge of literature, media and library services to young people.  Strong customer service skills.  Ability to establish customer service relations with library users.  Ability to positively inspire and energize customers about library services and materials.  Ability to use computer software to prepare materials for graphic reproduction or printing.  Ability and experience in providing story times, programs and public presentations to groups of varying ages.   Direct experience working with children  in a childcare, educational or library setting; knowledge of various reading levels of materials for youth.  Knowledge of library research and reference methods, philosophies and processes.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with library coworkers.  Ability to perform job duties during relaxed or stressed activity levels within the department.  Ability to work independently, complete tasks on time and to constructively problem solve. Education and/or experience:

Bachelor’s degree required.  Masters in Library Science (MLS) from accredited program preferred.  Three (3) years progressively responsible library or related experience required.  One (1) year supervision of paid staff including hiring, discipline, performance management & evaluation preferred.  Combination of education and experience may substitute for degree on a year-to-year basis.  Spanish language proficiency a plus.

Material and equipment directly used: 

Operating knowledge of library on-line computer catalog and staff terminals; Internet; PC’s; printers; laminators; photocopier; paper cutter; DVD; CD player; telephone; library carts; library materials (books, CD’s, DVDs, etc.); arts and crafts materials, social media tools, online collaboration platform (Zoom, WebEx), graphics programs, gaming systems.

Working conditions and physical requirements:

Work is performed in a typical public library environment with extensive public contact; must be able to access and visually scan the library computer and staff screens and explain the displayed information and direct customers to shelf location; must be able to position or move materials on varying height shelves and in file cabinets for extended periods of time; must be able to move library carts weighing in excess of 50 pounds across a carpeted floor.  Flexible schedules requires working some evening and weekend hours.
