Job Description

Overview: The Materials Handling Supervisor supervises, coaches, hires and evaluates the Material Handlers team and monitors the workload of staff. The position facilitates and helps develop consistent materials handling processes across Douglas County Libraries (DCL); including processing library materials, manually or using automated handling equipment; shelving and retrieving library materials, and straightening and reading shelves. This position assists the Materials Handling Manager with professional, managerial duties in cooperation with other professional staff. The role requires considerable excellent attention to detail and quality output results in all areas of responsibility. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities:

Leadership: 

  • Serves as a member of the branch leadership team and as a leader for the district in order to advance library services in Douglas County.
  • Cooperatively work with the Materials Handling Manager to communicate and implement DCL strategies and goals.
  • Oversees all staff management procedures including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, developing, and evaluating.
  • In conjunction with the Materials Handling Manager, conducts hiring interviews and makes hiring decisions.
  • Conducts quarterly side-by-side conversations with staff as well as a year-end conversation. Spends time with staff to ensure an appropriate level of performance and offers the ongoing opportunity for professional development.
  • Assists the Materials Handling Manager in preparing and maintaining yearly budgets for the material handling team.
  • Serves as Person-In-Charge on an as-needed basis in coordination with other branch leaders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Operations:

  • Manages, plans and oversees the workflow of all materials handling functions. Monitors workload of staff and facilitates completion of tasks.
  • Establishes goals for overall efficiency of materials handling in the Department for the materials handling team.
  • Monitors sorter operations and coordinates repairs and updates with Facilities and IT.
  • Coordinates with Collection Services to support courier duties and to resolve material issues.
  • Oversees staff efforts to accurately shelve and maintain all library materials.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Works collaboratively with leadership staff throughout the district to make continual progress fulfilling the strategic plan and other organizational goals.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and decision making as a member of the library management team to improve the quality of library services.
  • Proactively handles change management initiatives and works collaboratively both within the branch and DCL.
  • Plans and facilitates staff meetings. Attends meetings and participates in committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Ensures materials handling team understands and adheres to DCL policies and procedures.
  • Actively participates at DCL library leadership meetings

Technical Performance:

  • Maintains expert knowledge and use of computers, Microsoft Office Products, DCL information databases, and learning software. Learns new technology that is introduced in the industry and the organization, as needed.

Requirements

Experience and Qualifications: Read, write and speak English required. Three years’ experience in libraries required.  One year of supervisory experience is required.  Leadership and customer service experience preferred. Bachelor’s Degree is required. Master’s degree preferred. A combination of experience and education will be considered.

Physical Requirements:  Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a 7-day a week operation. Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, and read a minimum 8 point font, repetitively for extended periods. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, and grip up to 15 pounds, repetitively. Kneel, squat, climb, and work at a computer workstation, frequently. Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day.
