The library collection includes over 262,000 books, e-books, and audio-visual materials as well as over 120 databases of academic journal literature. Students, faculty and staff can borrow materials from CMU as well as other Colorado and regional libraries, including several large academic research libraries, with delivery to our Main and Montrose campuses, Western Colorado Community College Bishop campus, and to Distance Education students via many Colorado public libraries.


 

Tomlinson Library is a welcoming, comfortable environment, providing open study rooms and ones that can be reserved, a 24-hour study space, computers, printing & scanning, IT support, convenient dining and cafe options, outdoor seating with a fire pit, and much more.


 

Description of Job

This position serves as backup to manage the Checkout and Reserve Desk during the daytime shift including supervising, and training student workers, knowledge of Innovative circulation module and Banner, and works within existing policies. Provides Interlibrary Loan support.


 

Primary supervisor for the operations of Checkout & Reserves on Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and other times as needed. Staffs the Checkout & Reserves (C & R) Desk and/or supervises students staffing the desk. Closes the library on Friday afternoons. Opens and closes the library on Saturdays and others times as needed. Oversees the Checkout & Reserves Desk, which entails assisting patrons with dedication to a high degree of customer service, facilitating room reservations, supervising student workers, troubleshooting software and/or equipment problems, and managing the facility. Answers or refers inquiries, both in person and over the telephone, as appropriate. Watches out for patron safety by identifying emergency situations. Notifies authorities and patrons and/or clears the building as necessary.


 

The ILL Assistant shares responsibility with other ILL staff for monitoring and processing requests in a timely manner. The ILL Assistant monitors our interlibrary loan management system (ILLiad) in the afternoons, Tuesday through Friday, to keep borrowing and lending requests flowing through the ILL process. Monitoring this service may include printing paging slips, scanning articles and chapters, facilitating the electronic delivery of scans, and processing RapidILL electronic requests. The ILL Assistant also interprets, applies, and communicates ILL policies and procedures to CMU patrons and assists C & R student employees with Hold Shelf and other ILL request-related questions in order to provide high-level, accurate customer service.


 

As needed, the ILL Assistant checks for and prints pull slips for requested items, makes an afternoon trip to our storage facility to retrieved any item(s) requested from that location, and helps to prepare for courier pickups. The ILL Assistant also assists the ILL Technician with ILL services and management system troubleshooting needs. ILL Assistant may also search for unfound RAPID article requests and cancels them as necessary.


 

Evaluates and processes borrowing and lending requests in RapidILL to facilitate ILL services within Marmot, Prospector, and OCLC networks, which includes:


 

• printing paging slips, retrieving materials, processing requests in Sierra (our ILS), preparing outgoing materials for courier and USPS, and overseeing any student workers assisting in these processes


 

• bibliographic verification and database searching


 

Assists student employees’ workflow in ILL lending processes, including ensuring proper check-in and check-out of ILL materials


 

Supervises Checkout & Reserves student workers including participating in interviewing, training, scheduling, tracking performance, and assigning tasks and other related duties. Supervises student workers duties regarding (re)shelving, check-ins and check-outs, locating and handling Reserves and Hold Shelf items, and assists student workers involved in interlibrary loan and research help roles as needed. Trains, assigns work, and supervises student workers in C & R workflows and processes, including the Hold Shelf. Uses knowledge of interlibrary loan processes to assist student workers in locating, lending, and checking-in ILL items.


 

As needed, processes room reservation requests (and cancellations and revisions), monitors building, submits facilities and custodial requests, and provides administrative support to the Library Director.


 

Provides research guidance to library patrons both face-to-face and virtually, through regular weekly shifts at the Research Help Desk.


 

Searches for lost books across all library collection locations. Promotes and describes Library services to new and prospective students at orientation and recruitment events.


 

The hours for this position are:

Tuesday – Friday: 8a-5p

Saturday: 10a-5p


 

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of direct library customer service experience, which needs to include six months of working with Integrated Library Systems (Sierra, Millennium, etc.). Part-time work will be prorated.


 

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with resource-sharing systems and processes, and with various types of software and technology. Supervising or mentoring young adults in a library type setting.


 

Conditions of Employment: In accordance with Colorado Mesa University policy, must successfully complete a criminal background check.


 

Must be able to exert up to or in excess of 20 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds frequently. This position may require; standing, climbing, stooping, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, and color vision.
