Job Description

The Learning  Facilitator is responsible for providing direct service in the form of a variety of  learning options to adult library patrons and other communities. 

The Learning Facilitator role includes:

  • teaching ESOL, Citizenship, Digital Literacy, and content courses as needed.
  • academic tutoring for students looking to improve their skills needed around CASAS/TABE, GED, US Citizenship, ESOL, and other academic areas.
  • providing career services for job seekers, including career exploration and offering guidance in completing job searches, online applications, resumes and cover letters.
  • being a digital navigator - a guide to help community members access and navigate academic resources, digital literacy courses, mobile apps, and other tools.

The Facilitator will also help support program coordinator and volunteers, collect and analyze program data, and conduct outreach to help connect PPL services with community partners and the public.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Proctor Northstar Digital Literacy Assessments, and other tests as needed
  • Conduct outreach to help connect and refer patrons and learners to appropriate community partners and resources in the community and market our learning services across the state
  • Ensure smooth running of technology and spaces. Troubleshoot as needed
  • Manage data collection, reporting and analysis to ensure grant compliance
  • Communicate with agency staff and community partners to refer students in need of community resources
  • Train, and supervise Learning Lounge volunteers at assigned locations
  • Differentiate instruction and use varied instructional modalities: individualized, collaborative student groupings
  • Motivate and support adults in a culturally responsive manner; Analyze student progress to identify areas for improvement; Provide on-going to feedback to students and to supervisors
  • Deliver learner-centered and interactive learning activities that facilitate student learning of content areas 
  • Develop and implement instructional lessons based on a student's proficiency level using relevant content standards
  • Work with diverse learners covering a wide array of learning topics, including basic math, reading, employment readiness, digital literacy, and ESOL

The successful candidate will be:

  • Comfort with training and working with adults of diverse economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of current trends in career and workforce readiness and education, outcome-based assessment including digital badging and the concept of connected learning are a plus. 
  • Lifelong learner with a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and supporting an institutional culture of learning.
  • Consummate team-player who will help identify, nurture, and achieve shared goals with PPL staff, partners, and patrons/students with proven success in working with community partners, specifically in workforce development, adult education and/or diverse community outreach efforts.
  • Forward-thinker with a record of developing imaginative solutions to problems and creating support for solutions.
  • Flexible professional with the ability to adapt to change and able to handle multiple competing projects, priorities, and tasks. The duties of this position may change over time based on varying funding sources, community needs and other factors.  
  • Educator with knowledge of the educational/cognitive, and social/emotional needs of adult learners; ability to translate those needs and interests into effective library programs and services.  

Education & Experience Required:

  • Available during weeknights and/or weekend mornings required.
  • Knowledge of Spanish or other language/s helpful, but not required.
  • Position is based at Providence Public Library but must have ability to work independently off-site; locations may include libraries, schools, work sites, community and government organizations, etc.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with community partners, staff, and administration in a collaborative, productive, and supportive manner.
  • Experience in data collection and reporting
  • Proficiency in technology skills needed to teach Northstar or other Digital Literacy curriculum preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications, including the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and comfort working in a multicultural environment.  
  • Commitment to working with adults of diverse economic, linguistic, and/or cultural backgrounds.
  • Previous experience working with adult students preferred.
  • BS/BA in ESOL/Education or equivalent required.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is non-exempt and not part of the union
  • Physical requirements – Ability to occasionally lift/move up to 25 lbs
  • Position Location – Providence, RI and surrounding urban core cities 
  • Driving/Travel requirements – 80+% - local
