Job Description

The Public Services Librarian leads the Front Desk team and ensures users’ experience begins with empathetic customer service. The Librarian coordinates and provides in person and remote public services, develops and delivers information literacy programing, and assists researchers in the use of print and online resources.  The Librarian is responsible for maintaining the Circulating, Reference and Reserves collections and develops the Wilkens Library’s print and electronic collections in assigned areas.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Directs and participates in the operational procedures of all public services departments: circulation, reserves, and reference.  Includes entering and updating patron records; charging, renewing and discharging materials; and providing reference assistance in-person and online. 
2. Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates Public Services support staff including work-study students. 
3. Participates in the information literacy program; provides in person and remote instruction in information literacy skills; works with library professional staff and faculty to develop information literacy curricula.  
4. Maintains Course Reserves, including soliciting and organizing personal copies from Faculty. 
5. Manages the Circulation and Reference collections, including shelving, shifting and weeding projects. 
6. Collects and reports public services records and statistics, including assessment of information literacy activities. 
7. Participates in collection development in assigned subject areas. 
8. Participates in the development and maintenance of LibGuides. 
9. Participates in in-person and remote outreach activities to promote library resources and services. 
10. Keeps current in library and information literacy trends, participates in professional development activities, and works with consortia. 
11. Serves on College and consortia committees. 
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school. 
2. Three years of library experience, including supervisory experience. 
3. Broad understanding of academic subjects and domains.  
4. Excellent technology skills and the ability to adapt to new technology quickly. 
5. Knowledge of print and digital academic information resources and library networks. 
6. Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. 
7. Instruction experience or coursework in information literacy. 
8. Ability to work successfully with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and the public in a busy, multicultural environment. 

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Academic library experience. 
2. Public services experience. 
3. Training and experience building and maintaining LibGuides. 
4. Experience working with and promoting Open Educational Resources.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

MCCC Unit Position; Grade 5, Reference Librarian with annual salary range of $59,244 to $79,198.  Actual salary will be consistent with the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program.
