Job Description

The Bemis Library is looking for a Temporary Librarian to join our Adult Services team to specialize in Collection Development through researching trends, recommending, and coordinating the acquisition of new materials. Librarians at Bemis Library provide expert and excellent customer service to library patrons, answer reference and reader’s advisory questions, and instruct patrons how to use library services and resources, including print, electronic reference resources, and digital content. Librarians also select, order, and maintain materials for an assigned part of the collection, manage budget for assigned section, and provide special services such as compiling webliographies, bibliographies, and promotional flyers. 

The ideal candidate is passionate about, and has a broad range of experience in library work. The ideal is creative, listens to feedback from patrons and staff, stays abreast of current trends, and is enthusiastic about developing a robust and thoughtful collection.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Selects materials for the assigned portions of the library collection, Adult Fiction, Large Print Fiction and Non-fiction, Adult Audiobooks, and maintains an updated, balanced library collection. Follows Collection Development Policy and applicable library and city procedures to purchase these materials;
  • Manages budget for section areas; includes selection of materials and determining materials eligible for the bindery;
  • Participates in division staff meetings, and division planning, problem-solving and policy discussions. May participate in library committees to achieve strategic goals;
  • Compiles and curates web-based resources, webliographies, bibliographies and brochures to assist in using the collection and accessing electronic information;
  • Operates a personal computer with assigned software including the library’s ILS and Discovery layer, the Internet, office software, and online databases;
  • Provides formal and informal training to patrons in the use of library resources, including electronic reference resources, digital content, and library equipment;
  • Provides point-of-need instruction regarding the use of patron’s personal digital devices;
  • Assists and instructs patrons with computers, smartphones, and tablets as necessary;
  • Maintains daily order and safety. Consistently enforces library standards, codes of conduct, and library rules;
  • Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops to keep current with issues and literature;
  • May serve as Person in Charge;
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker; and
  • Performs other similar assignments and projects as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Expert knowledge of the principles, procedures and issues of public library operations and management; including safety and conduct.
  • Advanced project management skills and abilities.
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting, best practices and budget application within the library system.
  • Demonstrates a broader understanding of the job and looks for ways to promote Library’s collection; keeps current in relevant technology and library trends.
  • Uses problem solving skills to assist in determining priorities; utilizes timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues and demonstrates quality customer service.
  • Establishes professional relationships with vendors and demonstrates good interpersonal skills.
  • Responsive to change and demonstrates adaptability.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

This is a full-time temporary position funded by ARPA,  is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. This position’s salary and medical benefits are funded with American Rescue Plan Act funds through December 31, 2021 and is anticipated to continue through the end of 2024 subject to annual appropriation.  Benefits will also increase along with the appropriation to include full time medical, and other rich city provided benefits. 

Salary: 

Starting pay at or near $58,177 annually. 

Range $39,512-$70,227

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science;
  • Two (2) years of work experience in a library; and
  • Experience work with the public or in customer service; or
  • An equivalent combination of formal education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in library Collection Development
  • Experience with library purchasing processes and working with vendors
