Job Description

EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION

The primary responsibility of the Director of Library Services is to supervise and coordinate the overall direction of the Hay Library including planning and development, staff supervision, procurement of books, periodicals and electronic databases and resources. The Director must exercise strong leadership, supervisory, and technical skills that balance the needs for both electronic, virtual resources for distance education and for books, periodicals, and other physical resources that create an appropriate learning environment for our on-campus students.   

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Plans for and develops policies, procedures, services and resources to meet the curriculum needs of the College and to meet the general library needs of the community.
2. Supervises the library staff; completes performance evaluations as necessary, and promotes a cohesive library work force which is capable of and willing to provide friendly professional assistance to all users on campus and in the community.
3. Participates actively with college faculty and professional staff to select appropriate materials to update existing library collections. Works with the library staff in developing physical and electronic library collections.
4. Promotes innovation and creativity among staff; promotes an atmosphere of positive response to patron needs. 
5. Develops and maintains an appropriate inventory system in connection with the Business Office to ensure that all books, magazines, periodicals, supplies, and equipment are adequately monitored and that a proper discard procedure is enacted; takes prudent efforts to safeguard Western physical resources from unauthorized use.
6. Makes recommendations to the Vice President for Student Learning concerning new programs, physical facility needs, staffing requirements and other related matters. 
7. Promotes the library and its resources as a growing and vital part of the college and community.
8. Serves as a member of the Student Learning Council. 
9. Stays current on future trends and initiates procedures to adjust to the changing role of libraries.  Maintains current knowledge of technological developments in the library sciences.  Keeps abreast of professional developments by attending conferences, seminars and workshops and by reading appropriate professional literature. 
 

OTHER DUTIES
1. Serves as a resource person to the community as a whole by being willing to answer specific inquiries, assist with research projects and workshops, locate information and perform other related tasks. 

2. Learns the budgeting process; prepares annual budgets as requested; monitors budget expenditures and limits expenditures to budgeted levels.

3. Participates actively in the College’s on-going efforts to develop a more effective, creative and efficient learning environment for all Western students.

4. Assists in the College’s on-going recruitment program by cooperating faithfully with admissions personnel, encouraging students to attend Western, explaining the mission of the department and otherwise promoting the value of the college. 

5. Provides appropriate support and resources for Western’s distance students; coordinates and collaborates with the Senior Outreach Coordinator as appropriate; provides a user-friendly website for the multiple resources available to our distance students; visits Outreach sites to provide workshops on using the Library’s electronic resources effectively  

6. Maintains safe working conditions at all times. 

7. Works with Vice President for Student Learning to develop an individual development plan which will be of mutual benefit to the individual and to Western.

8. Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities) 

1. Graduation from a regionally and A.L.A. accredited college or university with a Master of Science Degree in Library Science or equivalent.

2.  Five years of administrative experience, which has provided the skills and knowledge, to succeed in this position.

3. Demonstrated experience with managing electronic data bases.

4. Demonstrated effective supervisory ability and experience.

5. Knowledge of the current concepts, principles and practices needed to successfully operate an academic library for a community college. 

6. Experience or demonstrated ability adapting to the changing demands and roles of academic libraries and librarians.  

7. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.   

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and with other members of the community. 

Equivalency Statement

For those candidates who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, will be acceptable.

1. Relevant work experience in a community college library.  

2. An understanding of the comprehensive community college philosophy.

3. Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
