Job Description

The Greenville Public Library is seeking an individual who is self-motivated, flexible, energetic and creative, with a genuine interest in working with children, youth, and families for part-time work in both the reference and children's departments.

Primary responsibilities in the children’s department will include developing and presenting children’s programs (both virtual and in-person), developing program marketing materials, and management of the children’s department webpage. Primary responsibilities in the reference department will include providing assistance to patrons with computers and printing, accessing digital resources, accessing physical materials, and responding to in-person and remotely submitted reference questions. This individual reports Children’s Librarian and to the Assistant Director.

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor’s Degree is required for this position. Strong computer skills and the ability to navigate current devices and technology to assist patrons. Minimum 2 years of experience working with the public. Experience with library service to children preferred. Previous or current Library courses a plus. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work on a team as well as independently on assigned projects. Willing to work both evenings and weekends. Schedule flexibility preferred.

Duties:

  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons in the reference and children’s department
  • Provide direct assistance to patrons using the public computers
  • Assist patrons in accessing digital resources including ebooks and databases
  • Retrieves items from the collection to fill patron requests on the holds list
  • Plan, present, and promote one monthly children’s program (virtual and in-person), including assisting in the implementation of the summer reading program
  • Prepare registration for monthly children’s programs and storyhours
  • Prepare signage, brochures, and decorations for the bulletin boards
  • Promotes children’s services in the community by doing outreach programming
  • Manage the children’s department webpage
  • Create subject bibliographies and reading lists
  • Assists in maintaining order and neatness in the children’s room.
  • Performs all tasks in a timely manner and with respect to deadlines set by the children’s librarian
  • Demonstrate an understanding and respect for diversity and inclusion
  • Other duties as assigned by the Children’s Librarian and/or the Assistant Director

Compensation: $18.00/hr; approx 22 hr/wk
