Library Associate

Rogers Free Library

Bristol, RI

The Rogers Free Library is seeking a patron-focused individual to fill the position of Library Associate.  This is a para-professional part-time position working at all public service desks.

This position requires flexibility, the ability to adapt quickly to technology, and a thorough knowledge of print and online resources.  Individual will be responsible for serving patrons in the library and assisting with programs and outreach. This position reports to the Circulation Supervisor, Reference Librarian, or Youth Services Librarian.

Examples of Work:

This position will work in any or all of the following library areas:  Circulation, Youth Services, and Reference.  The examples of work listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.                                                         

  • Assist with the operation of public service desks to include the registration of new patrons, book reserves, and checking in and out all materials.
  • Process incoming inter-library loans, as well as items to be sent out in the state-wide delivery system.
  • Process overdue notices and contacts patrons accordingly.
  • Maintain the accuracy of items on the reserve shelves.
  • Attend workshops and seminars as needed.
  • Provide information and assistance to library patrons.  Receive complaints or special requests from library users, and make every effort to follow through in response to them.  Maintain quality public relations, advising patrons of library programs, procedures, and policies.
  • Assist patrons with technology and troubleshoot issues with computers, printers, scanners, and mobile devices such as iPads or eReaders.
  • Assist and teach patrons in using the library's online resources including instructing patrons on how to download eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Occasionally assist other library staff in executing public programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • High school diploma or GED required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills secured through retail, library or other public service experience.
  • Good work ethic: punctuality in reporting for work, organizational skills, thoroughness in work completion, attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated competence in computer skills and willingness to learn new applications.
  • Ability to work well with the public and collaboratively with colleagues
  • Must be able to lift/move/carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Usual office working conditions.  Potential minimal exposure to noise, dust, inclement weather, temperature fluctuations.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and talk for potentially long periods of time.  This includes using a computer monitor, monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse to complete many of the daily tasks as well as usual office equipment.
