Job Description

Purpose: The Infrastructure Engineer role is responsible for both systems and networking by designing, installing, administering, and optimizing the Douglas County Libraries (DCL) servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications supported by tuning the servers as necessary. The role ensures availability of client server applications, configures all new implementations, and develops processes and procedures for ongoing server and enterprise environment management. Additional responsibilities for ensuring the security and safety of the data center/server farm. 
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

25% Server Infrastructure:

  • Supports DCL staff with day-to-day, advanced-level technology questions and needs through DCL’s Help Desk to solve complex hardware, software, and telecommunication problems.
  • Manages servers with responsibilities to purchase, hardware installation (hardware and software), software installation (operating systems and applications), security, and workstation coordination.
  • Maintains server infrastructure – space planning, cabinets/racks, environmental systems, power, physical security, fire suppression, and cabling.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with network, application, and database administration functions to ensure availability, reliability and scalability of DCL servers to meet business demands.
  • Plans and implements strategies or methodologies for storage and access of DCL’s digital assets, and ensuring that staff has secure access to their files from a central source or home directory.
  • Investigates and introduces methodologies and products to reduce server Total Cost of Ownership

25% Systems and Network Engineering:

  • Serves as system and network administrator.
  • Strategizes, manages, and maintains IT systems for DCL’s front- and back-of-house, providing a system with uptime performance functions at optimal levels.
  • Design new systems and technical architecture, continually improving on system performance and
  • Provides technical leadership and expert analysis for the design, implementation, support, and administration of the voice, Integrated Library System (ILS), data, and server infrastructure (i.e. routers, switches, firewalls, servers, storage, etc.).
  • Investigate, implement, and support server-based applications.
  • Manage ILS back-end infrastructure (i.e. Horizon), provide technical assistance to maintain and support the DCL ILS environment.
  • Serves as subject matter expert level IT support for escalations of complex help desk tickets for swift resolution.

25% Disaster & Backup Preparedness:

  • Manages redundancy systems to ensure available and resilience in times of crisis.
  • Data is restored when lost so that the organization continues to function during outages.
  • Conduct risk assessments and business impact analyses to identify vulnerable areas within the Douglas County Libraries’ critical functions.
  • Recommend and implement disaster avoidance strategies and impact reduction strategies.
  • Develop and establish disaster recovery procedures for the restoration of mission-critical business applications in the event of natural disasters, technical failures, power outages, and human interference.
  • Continually conduct simulations and test runs of system disruptions in order to revise and perfect plans.
  • Creates a hardware replacement plan. Identifies which hardware requires replacement, timeframe for replacement, and the implications to DCL infrastructure.

25% Advanced Administrative Tasks:

  • Manages telephony hardware and software.
  • Serves as mentor to Tech Analysts, providing training and support.
  • Project management
  • Performs training and support to DCL staff on computer applications.
  • Writes comprehensive, detailed documentation for systems, help desk tickets, and problem resolution that can be effectively used by co-workers for trouble-shooting and training purposes.
  • Builds strong, interpersonal relationship with co-workers and team members.
  • Conveys technical information in terms that are understandable to any audience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other related technical degree
  • Three to five years previous experience in general systems/server administration experience
  • Experience with project management methodologies and applications, meeting deliverables in a timely and reliable fashion.
  • Intermediate knowledge of at least three and expert knowledge of one of the following: W2K8, Linux, , OWA, SQL, ILS, Proxy, Apache, HAProxy, VMware, Netscaler.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public library service and extensive application support experience with Library Management Systems.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all types of server hardware and associated network equipment, including SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology.
  • Specific knowledge of windows server platform(s) required, as well as strong working knowledge of enterprise relational database(s).
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP and network protocols, firewall management, and operating system configuration
  • General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as Active Directory/Global Catalogue.
  • Proven knowledge of Datacenter Virtualization and Cloud Computing as well as desktop virtualization

Preferred

  • Certifications in A+, Server+, Security+, and MCITP

A combination of experience and education will be considered.

Physical Requirements: Ability to drive between various branches. Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a 7-day a week operation. Work at computer work-stations repetitively and for extended periods. Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day. Ability to read as small as 8pt font.
