Job Description

DIGITAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN, Information Services Dept.

35 Hour, Salaried, Exempt

POSITION

The Digital Services Librarian is responsible for providing information and assistance to patrons and staff in the use of library information resources, including print materials, electronic resources, databases and Internet tools, as well as readers’ advisory services, under the supervision of the Head of Information Services. Assist and collaborate with the Technology Coordinator as needed. Standard weekly hours will include one evening per week and one Saturday per month.

Principal Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and tasks listed are intended to be representative and may not be inclusive. Personnel are required to perform related tasks and duties as assigned.

I. Public Service

- Provides and promotes library reference & information services and readers’ advisory services to the community in a variety of formats website, book discussions, special programs, etc.

- Initiates and processes interlibrary loan requests, including verification, searching, maintaining files and contacting patrons.

- Researches interlibrary loan subject requests from other libraries.

- Troubleshoots digital book and audiobook, and digital app patron inquiries.

- Operates and manages the Tech Help Desk.

- Reads reference shelves; maintains daily reference statistics.

- Assists in training new reference staff members.

- Assists patrons in learning about library resources and services for independent use and research by providing informal instruction in the use of such resources (e.g. OSL catalog, Internet, electronic databases) with the Head of Information Services.

II. Collection Development

- Collection development and weeding responsibilities, as assigned by the Head of Information Services.

- Oversees digital content purchases, patron recommendations, and budget for digital book and audiobook materials, along with other collection development staff.

- Creates content for the website. Updates and maintains the website as needed or directed.

- Takes patron suggestions and searches book reviews for selection purposes.

III. Programming

- Plans, schedules, and implements computer and/or technology instruction classes for patrons.

- Assists the Head of Information Services in planning and directing departmental activities.

- Develops informative handouts on library materials, services, reading lists, web resources, etc.; and conducts formal training sessions with Head of Information Services both within and outside the library on how to use computers, databases, and the Internet to research information.

- Offers outreach information services to the Barrington community, bringing library resources beyond the building to target underserved segments of the population.

IV. Technology

- Supports library staff by troubleshooting software and hardware problems.

- Builds institutional knowledge by way of technical documentation and staff training, as directed by the Technology Coordinator.

- Provides staff training on audiovisual equipment in each meeting space, including outdoor programs requiring technology, as needed. Provides public training on audiovisual equipment in the absence of the Technology Coordinator.

V. Other

- Attends professional trainings and meetings and serves on various committees as pertains to the role of Digital Services Librarian.

- Acts as head in the absence of the Head of Information Services.

Physical Requirements:

Minimal to moderate physical effort required under typical office conditions include regular sitting, talking, walking and mental concentration for extended periods; intermittent moderate effort required for tasks such as moving files, books, or other library printed materials.  Position requires the ability to operate a keyboard, view computer screens, read small print, and adjust focus; hearing ability requirements include ability to interact with the public and answer the telephone; interact with co-workers, the public, city officials and outside organizations. Must be able to stoop, kneel, bend, reach forward and above the head; to receive books from patrons; lift books and other materials; bend and extend reach for such tasks as shelving books or emptying book drop.

Qualifications:

- ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS.

- Proficiency in instructing patrons of all ages on effective use of databases and other types of electronic resources, as well as Microsoft Office and OverDrive (or similar products).

- Knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they apply to information access.

- Experience with Sierra or ILS preferred.

- Ability to independently troubleshoot problems with public computers and provide assistance to the public and staff as needed.

- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

- A willingness to learn and grow as a professional.

- Ability to interact well with the public; tact and courtesy in dealing with library users.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

The salary for this position is $52,000. Includes professional development opportunities through in-person and virtual workshops, conferences and memberships to professional organizations.

The Community

Barrington Public Library is located in Barrington, Rhode Island, a suburban, seaside town with a population of 16,000. Barrington is about 10 miles from Providence, the capital and largest city of Rhode Island. The Library is situated next to the Barrington Town Hall and is attached to the Peck Center for Adult Enrichment (Senior Services). The Library is a member of Ocean State Libraries, a statewide consortium of public libraries.
