Job Description

This position will deliver responsive service to Boston University Libraries’ users at one or more of the Libraries' physical and virtual service points. Actively listens to questions and requests from the user community, interprets policies and procedures, and provides referrals to the Libraries' services and resources to address users' needs. Assists patrons to access materials, demonstrates how to find scholarly resources, and refers patrons to the appropriate library staff for consultations and in-depth research support. Engages in activities such as book searching and shelving, collecting statistics, handling financial transactions, sorting and delivering library materials, and identifying opportunities for service improvements. Participates in the receiving, sorting, delivery, check-in, and return of materials between library branches. Assists in the supervision and training of student employees.

There are five evening shift user services assistant positions available across Boston University Libraries' branches on the Charles River Campus.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 1 year of direct/related experience in libraries or comparable user services environment
  • Experience with using library catalogs and ability to use basic business software (e.g. Microsoft Office)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to work and contribute both independently and as a member of a service team, to work collaboratively and to interact effectively with a diverse group of people
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Exemplary attendance and dependability
  • Ability to lift, move, and shelve boxes and library materials up to 40 lbs and to move carts of library materials up to 150 lbs
  • Willingness to learn and grow
