Job Description

The Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) is hiring a vibrant, innovative and dynamic Collection Development Librarian to select children's materials across all formats! Your understanding of patron demands and knowledge of children's fiction and non-fiction, perennial favorites, readers, board books and more, will ensure we provide our younger patrons and their parents with what they want. Your passion for collecting the perfect titles will reflect the interest and needs of our residents and result in an exemplary, popular and well-circulating collection for the youngest residents of Jefferson County. You will bring an understanding of the role non-fiction titles have in a library, and sourcing what the Library needs to support all areas of the collection for our younger patrons. You will bring an understanding of the importance of early literacy and the role that your selections play in creating lifelong readers. You will use your collaborative skills to work with the Collections team and other Library staff to support weeding practices, and ensure that the best materials are being chosen for our patrons. The Community

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Knowledge of children's book selection, both fiction and non-fiction.
  • Knowledge of library and publishing trends.
  • Knowledge of vendor services.
  • Knowledge of weeding standards.
  • Ability to translate the needs and interests of our children's patrons into materials for our collection.
  • Budget allocation and tracking.
  • Analyzing the collection for usage and trends.
  • Handles patron suggestions for children's materials.
  • List creation to highlight the collection.
  • Stays current on trends in library services and materials to children.
  • Works on additional projects such as opening day collections.
  • Collaborates with others in cross-functional teams to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, able to work some evenings, weekends, or holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Selection skills to create a high interest public library collection.
  • Experience with collection development for children.
  • Ability to engage well with others and to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

Preferred - Master's In Library Science or Library Information Systems

Preferred - One year of public library experience.
