Job Description
The Early Literacy Librarian is responsible for library services, programs, and collections for young children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. This role serves as a liaison with public entities that serve ages 0-5 and is an expert in early childhood development and early literacy best practices.
Programming:
Responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating a regular schedule of high quality programs for young children ages 0-5. Programs will include story times and literacy / STEAM-based events that implement and encourage Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR2) early literacy practices, i.e. sing, talk, read, play, and write. Trains and evaluates paraprofessional staff in conducting story times.
Collections:
Develops, evaluates, and maintains a vibrant and relevant collection for ages 0-5, including board books, audio books, picture books, media, and other items appropriate for young children. Works with public services manager and communications team to market the collection to the community through a number of measures including videos, book lists, and posters.
Partnerships and Relationship Building:
Serves as a point of contact for all daycare providers, pre-K educators, and other such childcare providers and educators. Identifies and establishes relationships with organizations and individuals who provide services, resources, or care for children in the District.
Services:
Creates, maintains, and evaluates early literacy services, including 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, Growing Readers newsletter, and early literacy kits. Makes suggestions for new early literacy services based on growing library trends and community needs.
