Job Title:                            Collection Development Librarian, Adult Collections

Hiring Range:                    $48,100 – $54,500 annual

Summary:  Responsible for the selection of materials and collection maintenance as part of centralized collection development department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Create a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff that fosters equity, diversity and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect and value individual differences. 

·        Provide responsive, courteous service to all customers, regardless of age, race, class, gender, appearance or ability.

  • Selects and maintains circulating and reference collections using community and professional standards and library policy.
  • Order materials using vendor websites.
  • Order materials in a timely manner ensuring the steady flow of materials.
  • Coordinates weeding projects and provides training and support in the use of weeding procedures.
  • Negotiates vendor relations.
  • Responsible for the development of special collection.
  • Collaborates with other departments, librarians and branches to support their collection needs.
  • Analyzes statistical data in order to determine collection improvement strategies.
  • Implements changes to the selection and/or cataloging of material.
  • Monitors assigned budget area for expenditures in order to spend allocated funds.
  • Responds to customer inquiries for assistance in locating and sing library resources including the online catalog, public computers and variously formatted materials.
  • Promotes use of materials using Reader’s Advisory skills.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services.
  • Explains and assists in use of electronic and print reference resources.
  • Creates reference tools.
  • Provides leadership and coordination for districtwide projects and programs.
  • Designs, evaluates and maintains library web resources.
  • Performs Person in Charge duties as needed.
  • Directs and oversees the work of volunteers and hourly staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Superior customer service experience and skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including effective speaking, listening and writing are required.  Must communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Dewey classification system.  Knowledge of current and classic books, literature, authors and illustrators for a variety of ages preferred.
  • Understanding of general areas of human knowledge, including arts, sciences, literature, as well as geography and periods of history strongly desirable.
  • Ability to use word processing, database, photo editing, publishing and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to effectively utilize electronic resources.
  • Knowledge of the basic tenets of Intellectual Freedom.
  • Fluency in or familiarity with Spanish is desirable.

Education and Experience:

Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.  Two years related work experience.

Language Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to gather, interpret and present data.

Work Environment:

Standard library work environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle, feel, talk and hear.  The demands on the visual sense are high. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. The employee is frequently required to push carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
