Job Description
Purpose: The Catalog Librarian prepares bibliographic and item data to accurately describe library materials, to ensure access and discovery. This position exercises professional judgment and expertise in description of materials and online resources to serve the needs of our community. This role is responsible for thorough, on-line descriptions and access points for materials of all formats in the library’s collection with a low error rate. This role works as an effective member of the Infrastructure Services team and on cross-departmental teams in collaboration with other professional staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
60% Cataloging Materials:
- Consistency and accuracy in entering bibliographic and item data. Performs descriptive and subject cataloging, classification, and authority work in accordance with cataloging standards.
- Exhibits strong initiative in retaining working knowledge of current and emerging cataloging policies, practices, standards, and procedures.
- Enhances catalog records for existing items, ensuring premium discoverability.
- Uses innovative thinking in selecting, developing, and cataloging descriptions for new library acquisitions, and non-traditional catalog items.
- Continues to evolve and balance with library changes, vendor changes, and new product mediums.
- Responds quickly and cohesively to requests from branch staff.
- Learn new software packages quickly and with a high degree of accuracy.
25% Database Maintenance:
- Highly effective, timely, and productive output necessary for accuracy in data entry and low error rates.
- Regularly maintains the database to meet critical cataloging and high DCL standards, resulting in a premium guest experience in branches and on-line.
- Advises on technical and strategic issues related to library’s catalog and quality of catalog records.
- Responds well to feedback by using emotional intelligence, high critical thinking, expertise, and judgement to create customer-focused solutions.
15% Administrative Responsibilities:
- Stays current on DCL emails, meetings, trainings, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties.
- Extends professional courtesy to other team members and understands the big picture and the essential nature of every role at DCL.
- Stimulates collaborative, seamless relationships with co-workers and branch staff, thereby contributing to a cohesive organization that supports a positive culture and achieves strategic plan.
- Accurately records and shares cataloging stats monthly.
Performs other duties as assigned.
