Job Description

Library Technician

This position is subject to the Service Contract Act.

Under the direction of the Program Manager for the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Information Center, the Library Technician will assist staff, students, and constituents by fulfilling information requests and document orders.  This includes the duplication, packaging, and shipping of NIC library materials to students and staff in support of NIC classes and correctional conferences.  The individual will pull material from the library, the NIC item inventory, from the nicic.gov website, and various other web resources and databases.  Consideration will be given to candidates with strong customer service and interpersonal skills; those adept with Information Technology; and adaptable to changes in equipment, software, duplication and shipping procedures.  The individual will staff the library desk and provide library clerk services to NIC constituents in the field, students at the Academy, and federal partners in the NIC Washington, DC office.

Tasks and Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Provide library clerk services on the library floor, while staffing the front desk, and through the virtual helpdesk
  • Update the weekly calendar on upcoming NIC activities like classes, conferences, national events, and travel schedules
  • Provide mail clerk, receiving, packaging, metering, and shipping duties
  • Monitor, maintain, and report on NIC item inventory, library inventory, media production, and supplies
  • Store and organize NIC items, library items, supplies, and equipment
  • Support the development of NIC marketing materials through media packaging, library signage, and creative design of pamphlets or brochures
  • Develop and edit master source media to prepare for duplication services; Test source and duplication files
  • Duplication services to include mass production of CDs, DVDs, USBs, and print
  • Provide logistical support of correctional conferences by proactively communicating with NIC staff, preparing for conference requirements, and shipping equipment and materials
  • Provide regular reporting on metrics associated with the above duties

Functional Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years’ experience in an administrative work/volunteer environment
  • Advanced communication ability both written and verbally, to include public speaking
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to professionally collaborate with peers and
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US government issued Security Clearance

Compensation/Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $17.74
  • SCA Health & Welfare Hourly Rate: $4.54
  • Benefits: This position supports a SCA (Service Contract Act) contract; therefore, the hourly wage is determined by the Department of Labor. This position is classified as a Library Technician and the hourly wage is currently $17.74/hr and is eligible for Health and Welfare at an hourly rate of $4.54/hr.
