Job Description

If you are the person who organizes your spice rack using a system other than the alphabet - we want you! Lawrence Public Library is seeking an individual who is detail oriented, interested in organizing information, and not afraid to question authority, that is, authority records. As part of the Cataloging department, you will catalog and process the Adult Non-fiction, Magazines, and Poetry collections and help the department create and maintain an inclusive and accessible catalog. 

As a Cataloging Assistant, you will need to:

  • Catalog library materials following RDA, MARC, and local guidelines
  • Process new materials for cataloging and circulation by applying labels, stamps, barcodes, jacket covers, or other materials as necessary
  • Organize and complete preparatory work for special cataloging projects
  • Have a strong work ethic, learn quickly, and work efficiently
  • Enjoy working with diverse communities and ensure the right to free access of information
  • Provide coverage for the Acquisitions Assistant

Required qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent years of college
  • Moderate experience working in a library or maintaining records, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong writing and communication skills


Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Knowledge of MARC, RDA, and Dewey Decimal System
  • Passion for critical cataloging

This position is full-time, 40 hours a week with benefits, including health coverage, retirement, leave, and more! The hourly pay rate starts at $15.03.
