Job Description

CW MARS seeks an innovative cataloger/trainer who will work closely with our member libraries in the areas of cataloging, acquisitions and serials. The successful candidate will embrace technology and enjoy working with cataloging software and providing end-user training and support to library staff at all levels. The ideal candidate will help lead our consortium into the future by implementing our strategic goal to conduct a needs assessment with member libraries, benchmark consortium cataloging practices, and help identify opportunities to collaborate with member library cataloging staff and refine network cataloging services.

This is a supervisory level, full time position located in Worcester, Massachusetts with the option for remote work one to two days per week. Includes a competitive benefit package as well as relocation benefits.

POSITION SUMMARY  
Under the general direction of the Manager of Library Applications, this position: 

  • oversees ILS training and support provided to all CW MARS member libraries in the areas of: cataloging, acquisitions, and serials. 
  • provides bibliographic leadership and is responsible for the maintenance, accuracy, and enhancement of bibliographic data to ensure a high level of data quality and data integrity in the shared ILS. 
  • supervises one full-time and two part-time staff members, regularly reviews internal CatCenter workflows and makes recommendations for adapting to changes in technology and ILS software enhancements.  
  • works closely with the CW MARS Bibliographic Committee to review and create policy and develop initiatives that support the CW MARS strategic plan. Professional engagement is encouraged and supported. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  1. Supervises CatCenter staff and oversees daily work, staff training, performance goals and reviews, and professional development. 
  2. Establishes and reviews consortial cataloging procedures and practices for all materials in all formats, including print and electronic. 
  3. Keeps current on cataloging rules, local/national standards and trends, as well as emerging technologies relating to bibliographic data, libraries, and records management. 
  4. Manages the loading and quality control for all vendor supplied records and data on behalf of member libraries. 
  5. Organizes, schedules, and prepares training materials for cataloging workshops, roundtables and training sessions, held both in-person and remotely, in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, and serials.   
  6. Provides support, training, troubleshooting, testing, and end-user documentation and videos for ILS cataloging, acquisitions, and serials to member library staff.   
  7. Serves as a liaison to the CW MARS Bibliographic Committee and helps establish, review, and make recommendations for updating policies and procedures related to cataloging, acquisitions and serials.  Creates best practices and standards for entering bibliographic data into the ILS. 
  8. Provides onboarding assistance and coordinates bibliographic data uploads and cataloging training for new member libraries. 
  9. Participates in ILS upgrade planning and testing.  Reports and monitors ILS software bugs relating to cataloging, serials and acquisitions. Actively participates in the software community and follows the development of new features.  
  10. Holds the primary responsibility for quality control of bibliographic data, particularly in areas of authority control, serial records and duplicate records.  Manages and supports MARC record templates and other areas relating to ILS cataloging administration, such as call number prefixes/suffixes and format icons.  Coordinates and assigns data clean-up projects to CatCenter staff. 
  11. Oversees and reviews the input of new catalog records into OCLC created by the Bibliographic Services Librarian. Performs original cataloging as time allows. 
  12. Administers and supports 3rd party vendor subscriptions relating to cataloging tools and works with Business Administrator on renewals and invoicing. 

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week. 
  • Position is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Regular on-site attendance is required with the option to work remotely one to two days per week. 
  • Occasional travel may be required throughout Massachusetts.

Additional Info & Requirements

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program. 
  • Minimum of 3 years professional cataloging experience in a consortial environment.
  • Cataloging experience should include: 
    • original cataloging on a variety of formats, including the use of a standard classification scheme and standardized subject headings and/or thesauri. 
    • deep knowledge of MARC record formats and current cataloging standards. 
    • proficiency with using all cataloging components of an ILS. 
    • knowledge of cataloging standards for digital formats and familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards. 
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience managing cataloging staff is required. 
  • Knowledge of emerging information technology and trends in libraries is required. 
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team, a strong service orientation, and the ability to work with internal teams and cataloging staff at member libraries is essential.  
  • Proven written and oral communications, committee meeting facilitation skills, and experience leading in-person and virtual end-user training sessions required. 
  • Experience with OCLC searching, editing, overlaying and inputting original cataloging records is required. 
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace applications and experience with the Evergreen ILS are highly desired.

We host a shared integrated library system (ILS) powered by Evergreen open source software and provide networking and technical support to our member libraries. Our current membership is made up of 155 diverse libraries in Central and Western Massachusetts.
