Job Description

Job Title:                            Mentoring Assistant

Reports to:                        Library Manager

Department:                     Public Services

Location:                            Primarily remote, Old Town Library

FLSA Status:                      Non-exempt

Job Classification:            Hourly, Part-time 15 hours per week

Hiring Range:                    $17.12 - $19.26 per hour

Summary: This is primarily a remote position, with occasional work at Old Town Library or other locations in the community.  Under the direction of the Mentoring Coordinator, creates positive experiences for mentors and learners by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks in support of the library’s mentoring service, which includes citizenship mentoring, digital literacy and program support.  This position assists mentors and learners with finding and using library resources, including the online catalog, public computers, and community resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Create a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff that fosters equity, diversity and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect and value individual differences.  

·        Provide responsive, courteous service to all customers, regardless of age, race, class, gender, appearance or ability.

  • Collaborates with the Mentoring Coordinator to respond to service inquiries from potential mentors and learners.
  • At the direction of the mentoring coordinator, interviews new service participants and provides support administering English assessments.  Prepares assessment reports to assist coordinator in matching and onboarding new learning pairs.
  • Provides mentor/learner project and teaching support; schedules presentations.
  • Records and edits learner presentation videos.
  • Assists with planning and implementing mentor training sessions. Works with mentoring coordinator to schedule and conduct training sessions for volunteer tutors and learners.
  • Provides assistance with email and administrative functions related the mentoring service and citizenship tutoring.
  • Collaborates with Library District’s Volunteer Program Manager on recruitment efforts.
  • Provides assistance for volunteer training for Conversations in English program.  May fill in for volunteer facilitators.
  • Provides pro-active, courteous, efficient service to library customers. Greets and acknowledges customers and provides assistance as needed.
  • At the direction of the mentoring coordinator, may plan and implement public programs with assistance from volunteers and other District staff.
  • May assist with special projects and/or programs both in and outside the library.
  • Performs all tasks in a manner that preserves the privacy of all participants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including effective speaking, listening and writing are required. Must communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of teaching English as a second language.
  • Knowledge of current adult learning practices and methodology.
  • Knowledge of records management principles and practice.
  • Skill in operating a computer, computer equipment and printer/copier/scanner. 
  • Skill in facilitating online meetings and trainings.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Sharepoint, Teams technologies, and Zoom platform.
  • Basic to intermediate skills with video editing software.
  • Able to judiciously work with confidential information.
  • Able to foster a nonjudgmental, supportive environment for a diverse population of customers by using patience and effective communication to ensure a positive learning experience.
  • Able to demonstrate respect, courtesy and professionalism in all customer interactions.
  • Able to provide one-on-one or small group instruction in-person and virtually.
  • Able to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.  Minimum one-year working with English-language learners required. 

Language Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with customers and co-workers. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information and procedures. Ability to effectively listen and respond to customers of all cultures, identities, ages and abilities. Fluency in a language other than English is preferred. 

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.

  • Regularly operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, laptop and/or tablet PC, smartphone, telephone, digital device, copier and printer.

  • Travel to/from meetings and various locations. 
  • Work a varied schedule at various locations, including weekends and evenings.
