Job Description

The Mary and John Gray Library at Lamar University seeks an innovative and creative individual to join our team as STEM Librarian. Reporting to the Head, Research, Engagement, & Learning Department, the STEM Librarian will provide research services in person and and virtually at various events and locations across campus. The librarian is responsible for developing library guides, providing research services, information literacy instruction, research assistance, creating library guides and exhibits, and other duties as assigned. In addition, the librarian will collaborate with colleagues on library-wide committees and projects to advocate for the research needs of Lamar University/Lamar Institute Technology constituents. This is a 12 month, tenure-track faculty position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of STEM resources and tools supporting research and teaching in the sciences or a willingness to cultivate such knowledge.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of information literacy theory and practice.
  • General knowledge of print and electronic academic resources and reseach services.
  • Effective use of reference software tools such as SpringShare software products (LibGuides, LibAnswers, LibCal, ect.).
  • Maintain current awareness of library technologies, trends in librarianship, and active knowledge of research, instruction, and research resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to meet the promotion and tenure criteria of the Mary & John Gray Library faculty.
  • Familiarity with using Microsoft Office products (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook) and Blackboard or other learning management systems.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to work independently to seek out new responsibilities; generates new ideas; practices self-development.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience using technology as an instructional aid where appropriate to enhance learning.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities showing initiative and flexibility.

Education/Experience:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information studies or equivalent.
  • Applicable experience (three years) in an academic setting in research and instruction departments.
  • Experience using Springshare products such as LibGuides, LibChat, and LibAnswers.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM discipline and experience in using STEM resources (including databases, journals, and preprints) and instruction.
  • Have a record of scholarship, research, and professional service appropriate for appointment as a tenure track library faculty member.
