Job Description

Ocean State Libraries (OSL) seeks a Cataloging and Training Librarian to join its team. This is an exciting time to come on board! As a member of our team, you’ll play a critical role in ongoing and future projects including our exploration of the emerging BTCat cataloging service, our member-driven effort to decolonize and create more inclusive access in the library catalog, and the open procurement for our next integrated library system.

Duties

1. As a member of the Cataloging Team, contributes to original, copy and batch cataloging:

  • Catalogs items in assigned areas.
  • Contributes to database maintenance efforts to identify and correct errors in bibliographic records and to process authority record control.

2. Working closely with the Assistant Director and other staff members who provide training, contributes to the development and delivery of training to member library staff.

  • Develops and delivers live in-person and online training.
  • Develops related training materials, such as videos, written documentation, and FAQs.

3. Supports the eZone platform, OSL’s shared digital library, as needed, backing up the Assistant Director.

4. Serves as liaison to the Reference Working Group, one of six member working groups that advises the consortium on policy and practice.

5. Participates actively in other member working groups such as Cataloging and eZone (ebooks).

6. Contributes to efforts to provide leadership to the consortium and to member libraries, monitoring and advising members and OSL staff on emerging trends, best practices, and new opportunities related to cataloging, training, and digital resources.

7. Prepares written and oral reports and presentations to consortium members and others as needed.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

This position is non-exempt from the wage and overtime provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.

Salary Range: $46,500 - $64,000

OSL full time staff work 37.5 hours per week and receive 4 weeks of vacation leave, 2 personal days, 13 sick days and 14 paid holidays each year.

OSL staff members receive a benefits package that includes health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance and a retirement plan via TIAA with employer matching.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience with original and copy cataloging.
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards and best practices.
  • Experience with integrated library systems and related products.
  • Master’s degree in library and information sciences, completed or in-progress.
  • Customer Focus:  Builds and maintains effective relationships with members, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Consultative & Collaborative:  Is a knowledgeable resource for others, willingly shares knowledge and offers expert advice.  Actively enlists the participation of others and works collaboratively in the analysis of information and the development of possible solutions.
  • Innovation and Problem Solving:  Demonstrates a flexible style, is open and receptive to change.  Generates new ideas and approaches to enhance the existing systems, process, services, or effectiveness.

Preferred

  • Experience with bibliographic utilities such as BTCat, OCLC Connexion, or Sky River.
  • Experience delivering staff training.
  • Experience working in or with library consortia.
  • Experience with database coding/programming.
  • Experience with the management of OverDrive or other comparable products including content selection, budgeting, and curation.
  • Related education, training, or certifications.

The Community

OSL is a private, nonprofit consortium of Rhode Island’s 48 public libraries, St. George’s School, and the Office of Library & Information Services.  OSL coordinates a statewide library catalog of library materials, digital content, and future-ready technology services for its member libraries so they may better serve their patrons and communities.  With headquarters currently located in Warwick, Rhode Island, OSL staff work in the office, on site at member libraries, at home, and on site with consortium partners to deliver outstanding service to Rhode Island libraries.

The Cataloging and Training Librarian is an important member of this team.  As a member of the Cataloging Team, the incumbent contributes to cataloging (60%), training (30%), and the “eZone” ebook collection (10%).
