Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Scholarly Communications and Collections Services, the Digital Archivist for University Archives will play a key, collaborative, and critical role, working to create, document, and begin to implement an institutionally specific digital preservation plan for permanently valuable digital university records. 

This position will be part of a cross-departmental team in Special Collections and Archives, Digital Collections Services, and Library Technology Services, and will research and begin to implement a digital preservation plan based on current best practices and scoped to the needs and resources of the University. Working closely with both the Curator of Special Collections and Archives and the Digital Collections Librarian, this position will be integrated into the work of both their departments, and develop a plan based on a deep understanding of both archival practice and digital collections work gained from day-to-day experience with both units. This position will also work with the Associate Dean of Scholarly Communications and Collections Services and Dean of Libraries to ensure that they are part of conversations and decision-making (committees, task forces, cross-divisional meetings, etc.) at the divisional and university level that will necessarily factor into digital preservation planning. As a faculty member, the librarian actively engages in scholarly activities through research and publication and participates in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees.

This three-year contract position is part of the University Libraries Residency Program and provides early-career librarians with professional experience and mentoring in academic librarianship. Designed to engage librarians who are members of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, the residency program will give the successful candidate an opportunity to gain the experience and skills necessary to thrive as an academic and research librarian. Through this program, the successful candidate will attain experience in a range of areas of academic librarianship, gaining understanding of how academic and research libraries operate. The Digital Archivist for University Archives will have the support of the Residency Coordinator who will provide guidance and programming on academic librarianship, research, professional development, and cultural aspects of institutions of higher education. As a member of the University Libraries Faculty, the librarian will have the opportunity to serve on library and university committees and teams and will be provided funding and support to engage professionally at the regional and national level. Funding will be the same as other Assistant Professors and additional funding will be made available to attend ACRL Residency training/events.

Appointment will be made at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor, non-tenure track. At the end of the residency period, there may be an option, if it is mutually agreed by the candidate and the University of Denver Libraries administration, to be considered for a multi-year faculty contract as an Assistant Professor in the University Libraries faculty series, pending budget and position availability.

Essential Functions

• Researching current published best practices on digital university records programs, with an emphasis on private colleges and universities.
• Outreach to peer/aspirational peer institutions with robust, well-established digital archives and records programs to learn from others who have implemented best practices-based digital archives workflows and infrastructure.
• Developing relationships with key communities, stakeholders, records creators, and those responsible for digital records creation and management across the University of Denver campus.
• Selectively acquiring and maintaining permanently valuable digital University records in accordance with the University of Denver records retention schedule, as part of developing a robust digital archives workflow and infrastructure.
• Collaborating with Curator for Special Collections and Archives and Digital Collections Librarian, as well as any other relevant stakeholders (IT@DU, Risk Management, etc.) to prioritize outreach to divisions, departments, and communities with records that are significant to an understanding of the history of the University of Denver.
• Developing a robust, long-term digital archives workplan that is sustainable given the current resources of University of Denver Libraries.
• Serve on library and campus committees.
• Work in accord with the promotion guidelines, and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, as a library faculty member.
• Participate in national and regional professional organizations.
• Intentionally integrate diversity and inclusiveness into all aspects of the library.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• ALA-accredited library and information science masters degree or equivalent (candidate receiving a degree by June 2022 are eligible).
• Candidate must be an early-career librarian (graduated in or after 2019).
• Demonstrated knowledge, ability and potential to engage effectively with culturally-diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to clearly articulate career objectives within academic librarianship.
• Experience in an archival or cultural heritage setting. This could include library school practicum, independent study, volunteer, or similar experience.
• Experience with library management systems, ArchivesSpace, or other archives or library collection management systems. This experience could be within the context of a graduate-level course.
• Experience with digital curation software, such as: Archivematica, BitCurator, Archive-It, Webrecorder, Preservica. This experience could be within the context of a graduate-level course.
• Evidence of, or articulated interest in, developing skills that support the mission and strategic goals of the University of Denver Libraries.

Working Environment
The work environment is an academic library, which is culturally diverse. The library is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety, using workstations equipped with easy access to needed resources and access to the Internet. The unit is one of several working collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000.
