Job Description

The Scholarly Communications and Open Publishing Librarian provides expert guidance and training in contemporary scholarly communication issues and new modes of publishing for UW faculty, staff, and students. This position additionally provides leadership for and supports the UW Libraries Open Journals publishing platform, and advocates for open access publishing in the university community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Advocate for open access publishing in the university community and beyond 
  • Provide leadership for and support UW Libraries Open Journals publishing platform 
  • Serve as the point person for UW Libraries’ Alt-Textbook grant program 
  • Promote and support the use of UW’s institutional repository WyoScholar to faculty, students, and staff 
  • Develop partnerships to support the research lifecycle
  • Develops and collaborates closely with library and university faculty and departments to identify opportunities for open publishing 
  • Serve as point person for advice regarding author rights, copyright, fair use, and related topics, as well as UW Libraries’ OER Alt-Textbook program 
  • Coordinate, plan, and execute relevant workshops for students, faculty, and staff in the DSC with the assistance of Digital Collections staff 
  • Develop and implement training for librarians and staff on issues of scholarly communication and open scholarship, including outreach to community college librarians and administrators

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Ability to establish positive and productive collaboration working with diverse audiences and colleagues throughout the library and beyond 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for open publishing, open access, licensing, and open educational resources  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content publishing and hosting platforms (e.g., Open Journal Systems, DSpace, Islandora, Figshare) 
  • Commitment to continued growth in areas of responsibility independently and in team settings 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*: 

  • Experience providing instruction, research consultation services, and/or workshops to faculty, students, and staff in an academic setting 
  • Experience with content publishing and hosting platforms (e.g., Open Journal Systems, DSpace, Islandora, Figshare) 
  • Experience promoting open scholarship and open access to an academic community 
  • Experience evaluating complex copyright & licensing questions 
  • Demonstrated research interest and scholarly activity in the field
