Job Description

The Opportunity

As the Metadata Initiatives Librarian, the successful candidate will help the Mines Library enhance the discovery and use of our rich collections and services.

We are seeking creative, collaborative, passionate, and innovative candidates to provide leadership in the area of metadata and cataloging.  Working in a highly collaborative, small-team environment, the candidate’s leadership responsibilities will intersect with many of the Library’s key strategic initiatives.

The Metadata Initiatives Librarian will catalog materials, contribute to policy and procedure decisions, develop workflows, and seek creative approaches for metadata management. Responsibilities of the position evolve as the library environment continues to change as well as working with your expertise and allowing you to explore and grow into new areas of interest.

This position is part of the Collection Management Services section, working in coordination with the Head of Collection Management Services and reporting directly to the University Librarian.  As an academic faculty position, additional responsibilities include engagement in scholarship, involvement in professional development activities, and service to the institution and the library profession.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Metadata Initiatives Librarian:

  1. Developing and maintaining local policies for, and participating in the creation of, original and complex copy-cataloging in multiple formats
  2. Evaluating and making recommendations concerning emerging metadata standards
  3. Overseeing catalog maintenance activities, including metadata loads, record source management, and database quality control issues as they relate to bibliographic and item-level access to library resources
  4. Participate, plan, organize, and evaluate the library management system, Alma, workflows (particularly as they relate to cataloging) to maximize efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of the other library departments and of library users
  5. Coordinate and manage OCLC services and authority control
  6. Supervise and train students working on cataloging and metadata quality control projects, copy cataloging, and database maintenance activities
  7. Support and collaborate with library staff members with a wide range of experience working on cataloging and metadata quality control projects, original and copy cataloging, and database maintenance activities
  8. Remain informed about emerging issues, standards, and technologies regarding the library profession
  9. Serve on committees for the Library, the University, and other organizations, contribute to the profession, and engage in scholarship

Scholarship:

As outlined in section 6.6 of the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs Procedures Manual (Demonstration of Attainment of Promotion Criteria for Library Faculty), engage in professional research and dissemination of research results.

Service:

As outlined in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs Procedures Manual, section 6.6 (Demonstration of Attainment of Promotion Criteria for Library Faculty): 

  • Participate as an active member of the Mines library faculty, serving on Library and University committees.
  • Interact with the library community on a state, regional, national and/or international level, both formally via service to professional organizations and informally via cooperation and communication with other library professionals.

Pay Range

Mines is offering an annual salary of $64,100 - $75,180

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited school (granted by start date)
  • Direct experience cataloging or managing metadata
  • Familiarity with current and emerging issues, trends, workflows, and best practices in metadata
  • Knowledge of bibliographic metadata standards, including RDA, MARC, LCC, LCSH, and experience creating and working with authority data
  • Flexibility and creativity in adapting to rapidly changing metadata management circumstances
  • Ability to work effectively in both an independent and collaborative and complex environment
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, including complex problem solving
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to user-centric librarianship, scholarship, and service
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with a next generation library management system and discovery layer (i.e., Alma/Primo)
  • Experience with analyzing and remediating existing metadata to meet current standards
  • Experience in designing and implementing batch processes for working with bibliographic records
  • Experience working with non-bibliographic library metadata schema such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, METS or MODS
  • Knowledge of linked data, ontologies, and taxonomies
  • Experience in project planning, workflow development, and/or writing documentation
