We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where we serve people of all ages from diverse ethnicities, all gender and sexual identities and with varied mental and physical abilities.

DPL is hiring a Librarian with a focus on services for Adults and Older Adults, who will provide excellent customer service and programming at the Hampden Branch Library. In this position, you will spend the majority of your time in a public-facing role assisting customers with reference questions, providing resources, offering readers advisory and helping customers navigate technology. You will collaborate with colleagues to develop and maintain high quality programming and services for customers of all ages and backgrounds, with a focus and passion toward working with adults and Older Adults (ages 50+). Interested candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens. Your work will include building and maintaining community relationships through outreach and dedication to regular partnerships with senior living sites, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, local businesses, and other organizations that support people aging in place. You will foster relationships with colleagues throughout DPL and participate in relevant library committee work. You will design engaging displays and participate in merchandising of the entire collection and you will support other library functions as needed.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Knowledge and experience in developing, planning and facilitating programming.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing tech help for both 1-on-1 and class instruction
  • Skill in providing reference, readers and media advisory services to all ages.
  • Ability to confidently present and provide library services and technology to customers with varying levels of experience and knowledge.
  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, eMedia, social media and other software.
  • A strong desire to create and maintain positive relationships with customers, staff and the community both in the branch and at outreach events.
  • A positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers, coworkers and community.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the capability to provide equitable, trauma informed and empathetic customer service drawn from lived experiences and knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion concepts and practices.
  • Experience working with older adults and/or with folks with dementia/Alzheimer's is desired, but not required.
  • Innovation and flexibility when working in a team environment.
  • Spanish, Arabic or Somali language skills preferred, but not required.
