Job Description

Warwick Public Library is seeking a part-time Children's Librarian who is eager to work in a vibrant space, with a dynamic team to provide excellent service and programs to children and families. The Children’s Librarian works independently and collaboratively with the children’s department team to develop, implement, and present programs and services, and to build and maintain collections for children ages birth to twelve and their families.  Includes providing an outstanding patron experience for those served in the Children’s Library, as well as through outreach to members of the community.

Examples of Duties

·         Provide reference help and reader’s advisory to children, parents, teachers, and others

·         Develop, plan and conduct programs in the library and out in the community that promote and nurture the habit of reading and encourage use of the library

·         Keep current regarding trends in youth services and issues affecting youth, participate in professional development and professional library organizations

·         Lead classroom visits to the library and participate in outreach visits to schools

·         Build programs to link the library to community groups

·         Assist in selecting resources and materials to enhance the library collection

·         Design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents

·         Plan and manage displays

·         Supervise paraprofessional staff

·         Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the head of the department

·         Perform additional related duties as required

Additional Info & Requirements

A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school. Must have a knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work; knowledge of current trends in reference services and library services for patrons of all ages; ability to interact effectively with library staff; ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.

Must be willing to work nights and weekends. September - May, this position will be assigned a 4 hour shift one Sunday per month.

The Community

The Library is located in the heart of Warwick and provides services through the Central location and three small branch libraries. The population of Warwick is roughly 81,000, but the Library is used by patrons from all over the state.
