Department and Position Information
The City of Aurora's Library and Cultural Services Department is looking for a Library Security Clerk to provide the highest level of customer service. This individual will provide customer service and will be a main point of contact to visitors.

The Library and Cultural Services Departments vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of Aurorans.  We have two divisions within the department: Library and Cultural Services, both offering a variety of free programs and services to the community.

Locations: Will work primarily at assigned location below. hours may change based on business need.  May be asked occasionally to substitute at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Security Duties (primary job duties):
 

  • Functions primarily as Library facility/public security monitor, and provides basic customer assistance
  • Monitors library facilities
  • Conducts patrols of facilities – both inside and outside – to provide a visible and professional presence in customer areas, observes customer activity, tactfully enforces library customer conduct policies, inspects and reports vandalism and suspicious activity
  • Checks doors and non-public areas to ensure they are secure, escorts staff into and out of the building as requested
  • Is available while on duty via radio to assist staff with difficult customers or with other security concerns
  • Consults with Operations Manager as well as supervisory staff for direction on actions to be taken in non-emergency situations
  • Reports and calls police independently during emergency situations; however, does not detain, restrain, or physically touch customers outside of life-threatening situations
  • Complete incident reports and log them into the electronic database
  • Works with staff, contract guard services, and/or police to assist in incident investigations as needed
  • Observes or reviews security camera footage as needed

Service Desk Focus (primary job duties):
 

  • Checks books/other items in and out through computerized system
  • Answers general customer questions regarding library policy, procedures and customer accounts
  • Answers basic reference, reader’s advisory and general customer questions
  • Redirects more advanced reference questions to Reference staff as and when appropriate
  • Operates and maintains a cash register as well as conducting customer payment transactions
  • Performs data entry into library system, spreadsheets and other databases
  • Sorts, processes, shelves and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties
  • Assists with research and programs as needed
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly)



 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.    

Experience:

  • At least 6 months of direct customer service in retail or service industry setting preferred. Library background and security experience are preferred but not required.


Knowledge & Skills 

  • Surveillance Skills, Deals with Uncertainty, Uses Good Judgment, and Objectivity, Dependability, Emotional Control, Integrity, Safety Management, Professionalism, Reporting Skills
  • Customer service techniques, routine software/computer systems including the internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, database input/use and inventory/customer transaction systems.

Abilities:

  • Tactfully enforce customer conduct policies
  • Ability to move swiftly; stay alert and anticipate behavior issues
  • Exercise good judgment in difficult and/or tense situations
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate with diverse individuals of all ages in a professional, age and culturally appropriate manner
  • Use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine, perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends

  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus

Licenses and Certifications:  As assigned, specialized certifications may be required, such as:

  • Driver's License
  • CPR / AED / Basic First Aid

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical work requiring the ability to lift 30 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequent walking and standing
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard
  • Vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees, customers and community members


Work Environment:

  • Works primarily out of a clean, comfortable shared office environment with dedicated work station and equipment
  • Shift work to include days, nights, and weekends


Equipment Used:

  • Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, printers and copiers. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
