Job Description

In this physically demanding role, works as part of a dedicated and collaborative team to make library materials readily available to patrons. Processes and shelves library materials accurately and efficiently while remaining responsive to patrons visiting the library. Prepares out-going items and receives in-coming items as part of resource-sharing relationships with other libraries. Maintains the general order of library materials and performs associated circulation activities in support of library services. Though assigned to a primary location, is readily available to work at any library location upon request as business needs and management direct.

1.    Creates the best possible customer experience by proactively providing friendly, thorough, and thoughtful service in all patron interactions.

2.    Sorts and shelves all library materials in alphabetical or numerical order.

3.    Operates and monitors the automated materials handling system as materials are returned. Troubleshoots any mechanical or computer-related issues with the system, contacting the technical support hotline when necessary.

4.    Retrieves items requested by patrons from the shelves. Prepares these items for patron pick-up or for delivery to other locations using the library’s computer system.

5.    Unpacks, sorts, and checks-in materials delivered from other library locations using the library’s computer system.

6.    Identifies and sets aside library materials in poor condition for possible replacement.  

7.    When serving at a branch, functions as backup to desk staff as needed and assists with opening and closing procedures in addition to performing materials handling functions.

8.    Communicates effectively with colleagues throughout each shift to ensure smooth operations.

9.    Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the library system and the City of Boulder.

(1) TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Materials Handling Supervisor or Branch Manager


•    Ability to put items in alphabetical and numerical order with speed and accuracy.  
•    Ability to operate a personal computer to navigate the Internet, respond to email, and use basic database programs.
•    Ability to learn and become proficient with specific equipment and software programs to effectively perform assigned duties.
•    Ability to communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing.
•    Work or life experience demonstrating punctuality and dependability.
•    Work or life experience demonstrating the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively and efficiently.
•    Work or life experience demonstrating the ability to work successfully as part of a team.

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS (In addition to the required qualifications)
•    Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, preferably Spanish.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions:
Physical and Mental Effort: Primarily active physical work, which requires constant lifting up to 8 pounds’ knee to waist, frequent lifting of 5 pounds over head, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds’ floor to waist.  Requires repetitive to constant use of the hands; frequent pushing/pulling of book carts or smart bins equal to 20 to 40 pounds of horizontal force.  Must be able to constantly walk or stand for up to 4 – 6 hours per day.  Must be able to frequently bend, squat, and kneel.  Must be able to constantly reach below shoulder level and frequently reach above shoulder level to overhead. Must have hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with co-workers and the public. Ability to work under stress from high volume of work; daily deadlines; public contact; rotating groups of coworkers; and changing priorities and conditions.
Work Environment: Works in public areas of the library and in staff-only areas (including the basement at Main Library), operating and monitoring equipment that produces a moderate level of background noise, and in a setting subject to interruptions.
Machines and equipment used in work include but are not limited to the following: Personal computers; Automated Materials Handling Systems; RFID readers and technology; CD/DVD buffing or repair machines; office, receipt, and barcode printers; hand-held barcode scanners; telephones; and photocopy and scanning machines.
