Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

General Duties:

Greets and welcomes the public.  Provides customer assistance in person or on the phone.  Interviews patrons and determines information needs;  assists patrons in the use of library catalog, databases and resource materials; answers reference questions using print and electronic resources; recommends book and other library materials; takes interlibrary loan requests, meeting room inquiries, and keeps statistics. Responds to and resolves routine customer needs that may include location of materials; information regarding library services or programs; interpretation of library policy; instruction in the use of the library catalog, Internet computers & accompanying software and other equipment such as copy machines and scanners. Sets-up equipment including sound system, multimedia projector, laptop configuration, TV/DVD for meetings or events.  Refers patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintains confidentiality of all patron data and information.

Assists librarians in collection development and maintenance as needed including weeding, shifting and shelving materials. Assists in maintaining the library areas to include straightening, picking up materials, organizing, re-shelving, or shelf reading.  

Circulation and Volunteer Database Administration (Performs the following additional duties, if applicable):

Majority of work will be performing routine customer service and assisting patrons at the circulation desk and in the community as a circulation outreach specialist. Attends indoor and outdoor events at locations throughout the city, including but not limited to housing complexes, public schools and public events, providing circulation services as part of the larger outreach team. Assists patrons at the Public Service desk with room reservations and technology needs, including the use of the internet computers. Works as the Volunteer Database Administrator for the Library; inputting and maintaining information related to volunteers and volunteer tasks, including personal/demographic data, requests for volunteers and schedules.  Provides support and backup to collection management and cataloging teams as needed.
